JOverseer - new combined mapping/order input program now available

Ok, I think I got it to work on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I was having a problem with the Java folder being in my C:\Program Files (x86)\Java folder. Apparently the command prompt could not read past C:\Program …

Here’s what I did:

  1. After uninstalling the old Java (from Control Panel\Programs and Features), I downloaded a new Java 1.6.0_06 to a C:\Java folder.

  2. Next I opened the JOverseer folder, right-clicked and selected EDIT to change the joverseer.bat file to read the following:

C:\Java\jre1.6.0_06\bin\java -Xmx384M -jar joverseer.jar

  1. Then to open Joverseer, I just needed to double-left-click the JOverseer.bat file.

I haven’t done more than load in my three games, but it seems to be working thusfar. Thanks for all your help troubleshooting this!

What a wonderful program - Made with lots of love

However

I know it’s been playtested but there are still errors and ideas for improvements and I wouldn’t want to fill the forum with these.

Example of error “1650 map no ford ne from hex 2707”

Is there somewhere we can post such things and ideas for upgrades.

I appreciate that this is a labour of love and it is the best thing I seen for a long time in any game. I would just like to make it better.

Cheers

In the case of spaces in a command like that, just surround the entire thing in double quotes like “C:\Program Files (x86)\Java” (but the quotes go around the whole command line, not just the part I showed).

John,

You are right, it does still have problems and omissions, I never claimed it doesn’t. The point is to find them and fix them. I generally try to accommodate user feedback.

So feel free to drop myself (mscoon@gmail.com) or Brad an email, or post here, or if you want to be extra vocal, you can join the JOverseer yahoo group (link on the project page)

Cheers,
Marios

Hi,

Just been experimenting with a little with JOverseer and compared to Archon which I used before, there are a few important tools which I’m really missing. But it of course has a lot of new funtionality which makes it really nice.

  1. Where is the rumor list, where all dublicates and other irellevant stuff has been removed ? I think this is a great feature in Archon which gives you a perfect overview of the enemy agent actions.

  2. Where is the switch to see the enemy map ranges ? Now I have to use other tolls for studying the enemies map ranges.

  3. Where is the Cut-and -paste funtionality to get character ID names copied into Automagic. Now I have to spell them myself with the chance of misspelling the ID, which could be disasterious in some circumstances

Also I had a problem with importing an entire tree of turns, after following the explanations of doing so, so I had to import one turn at a time. But maby thats just my computer…

  1. Window - Show View - Basic Info - Nat Msgs shows rumours

  2. Map Options - the Map menu is defaulted to Current (which shows what you can see in the files you’ve loaded)

  3. Do the orders in JOverseer…!!!

Or, you can go to the Chars (adv) tab, filter for your nation, then click the little yellow arrow that looks like a sideways enter key - it’s “Copy to Clipboard” then paste into Excel. But really, learn how to do orders in JOverseer - Drag and Drop hexes, character names, arty #'s, etc. Draw the orders (choose 830 then click Draw Orders and watch your navy move across the ocean…No More Mistakes!).

I’m not sure this is an error in Joverseer, or my ineptitude (probably the latter). But how do I add pop. centres to the combat calculator in the program? i can add/edit armies fine but I can’t seem to do the same for PCs.

Thanks.

Gajendra

You need to bring up the pop centers tab that is on the main screen, and drag and drop the pop center into the combat calc.

Note that if it’s an enemy pop center, you will want to manually edit the loyalty as it will default to 0.

Similarly you can drag and drop armies into the combat calculator. This is especially useful for existing friendly armies, as you don’t have to hand type the morale, training and weapon stats - they come with the army.

Hope this helps.

That helped a great deal. Thanks!

I have the problem that the program will not load the pdf files. The xml files is no problem and they are in the same folder:confused:
