Not much love for DC but I'm all for it. I could drive down each
day. That would be nice...

Greg

I am close to moonville...

To tell the truth, I vote for Charlotte... it isn't too big, it has

a nice airport, and it isn't a money pit compared to DC, Boston, New
York, etc.

game in Moonville or Possum Creek?

But, yeah, I would drive 8-10 hours. I could also make something

around Iowa or Minn. or Illinois if it was timed right.

There's a difference between 2950 normal play and in a FTF environment.

I've run many FTFs now and even strong economies go belly-up with just one careless (or time-rushed) mistake. Also there's less 2950 players (1/3 I'd say) than 1650. I'm not saying 2950 is a better game or not - it's that for this format it's less robust and so more likely to have players have a less enjoyable time.

To get a FTF game going takes some compromise (by all I might add) otherwise it won't work. BUT before we go into the specifics about this until we get numbers and then I aim to see if we can get a game from that (it might be that it's 2950 but for now I can't see that happening).

What your saying when you use phrases like "fragile economies" and "less robust" is that there is "more carefull thinking" involved in 2950... correct?

Yes - and in a FTF that's hard to organise. Or you can do but then you slow down turnaround to a crawl. The Copenhagen game had a couple of players slowly do their turns (despite having them first - we work to the slowest teams - generally DS) and trying to very intricate plans etc that just took a lot of time for a small gain so slowed turnaround around so I reckon we missed 2 turns and for a group of players that are new to this all etc then.

Also 1650 has the faster start so better for FTF games. Lots going on right from the start so that's useful.

Normally I can organise (if TC) the buyout, rough army plans, gold sends, artefact retrieval etc in the first 10 minutes (takes a bit of "QUIET!" and Ulrik to be a capable side-kick) etc. The other 40 minutes are for getting the orders done, helping out less experienced players and the minutae.

Tom: Oh yeh a printer or two compatible with what we've got so that we can print out turns. (We'd bring 4 but just in case - one for printing out a map as well).

What your saying when you use phrases like "fragile economies" and "less robust" is that there is "more carefull thinking" involved in 2950... correct?

FOUR!!!

Ye gods, your baggage must be fun to watch go through Customs...

Just one thought: would it be economical to arrange to buy four cheap
printers in the US and then simply sell them afterwards at a discount to
players/locals who want them. Presumably, the balance could then be put
against the company tax bill. Plus, you lug around a lot less breakable
stuff...

Problem is that things might not be compatible.

I've been through US customs a few times and it's fun anyway...

Is there something special about the software or hardware you use that would
make a bog standard printer incompatible then? At least the current and
plugs would be guaranteed suitable for local use.

What Clint means is 1650 is Checkers and 2950 is Chess.

There's a difference between 2950 normal play and in a FTF environment.

I've run many FTFs now and even strong economies go belly-up with just one
    careless (or time-rushed) mistake. Also there's less 2950 players (1/3 I'd
say) than 1650. I'm not saying 2950 is a better game or not - it's that
for this format it's less robust and so more likely to have players have a
    less enjoyable time.

To get a FTF game going takes some compromise (by all I might add)
otherwise it won't work. BUT before we go into the specifics about this
until we get numbers and then I aim to see if we can get a game from that
(it might be that it's 2950 but for now I can't see that happening).

    Clint

well, many of us have played 2950 for years, and
    >actually *like* the fragility. But in any event, I

 Most amusing. Played enough competition chess to think that's a GOOD thing!

What your saying when you use phrases like "fragile economies" and "less robust" is that there is "more carefull thinking" involved in 2950... correct?

Or is 2950 where the wounded dogs, crippled elders, and "special" youth who can't keep up go to make friends amongst their peers...?

The substantial difference here is that both versions of the game have "...wounded dogs, crippled elders, and "special" youth..." save that those in 1650 get prostheses, seeing eye dogs, etc. to compensate for their inadequacies/frailties as players.
