The books of Lost Tales have some interesting tidbits in them. For instance, one of them has a section or chapter dealing with another continent to the East beyond Middle-earth. It is filled with pixies and other fey creatures. Two previously unnamed Valar went to that continent, a set of brother and sister twins, evil in nature who stirred up trouble.

Of course, there is alot of goofy, unreadable stuff there too. Unfinished sentences, interspersed with Christopher’s thoughts on what he conjectures his father was trying to convey, makes for a bit of a jangled mess.

Interesting stuff, but alot of it weak compared to the finished, published, and editted Silmarillion.

From Goblin-Gate and the Eagle’s Eyrie module:

Morwen – Dunadan ranger – 10th level – 10 CO/10 AG/10 EM

Ten years ago, the beautiful Morwen appeared in Maethelburg (hex 2508, Major Town/Tower), and since then the town has never been quite the same. A score of men have been captivated by her stunning figure, shining dark eyes, and clever wit, but Morwen has spurned them all, leaving a trail of ugly rumors generated by rejected suitors. No one knows anything certain of her origins, but it is believed that the Dunadan lady came over the mountains from Eriador seeking to distance herself from some family trouble. Some less charitable voices whisper that she has dealings with the Witch-king, and is a witch herself. Nothing could be less true, but Morwen does not trouble to dispel the rumors, which offer good cover. In fact, she is an agent of the King of Arthedain, his best spy in the Anduin Vales, whose duty is to watch Angmar’s eastern territories. She is obliged to keep her purposes secret.

From the module, Bree and the Barrow-Downs:

Meneldir – Dunadan fighter – 13th level – 40 CO

Meneldir is a man of Fornost, of Dunedain and lesser mannish parentage. He comes from a good family, although he is not a member of the nobility; he has seen extensive action against Angmar.

His command as Captain of the Guard in Bree is actually one of semi-retirement, since he has already put in 25 years of military service. Meneldir is only 45, which is still young for a man of Dunedain blood. He loves farming and is planning a permanent retirement in Bree, hopefully with a Holly Heathertoes, a golden haired lass whose primary roots are Dunnish but with a strong hint of Northman.

Bree-land is comparatively quiet but Meneldir has many duties. Not only is he responsible for patrolling the region, but he must also keep a constant watch for outlaws and other unsavory types. Travellers of all sorts pass through Bree, some more honest than others, and a few are inclined to cause trouble outside the town’s borders. Meneldir regularly sends patrols out along both roads in the vicinity of Bree in an effort to discourage bandits.

Meneldir is universally liked and respected by his men and the people of Bree-land.

From Trolls of the Misty Mountains:

Arfanhil – Dunadan fighter – 3rd level – 40 CO

Some liberty has been taken converting Arfanhil into the MEPBM character. In the module, he is but a 17 year old yet to fully come into his own; not yet in possession of the Herufea. The module has an adventure that has you attempt to beat the evil brother mages who do own the Herufea and in turn rescue Arfanhil, the theoretical heir of the kingdom of Rhudaur.

Arfanhil is described as a brash youth whose spirit has yet to be broken despite his imprisonment of nearly a year, retaining the will of his princely Dunedain ancestors. His natural parents killed, he was raised by a family of mixed-blood settlers. One night a young woman appeared at the door, claiming to be his sister, and telling him that he was the last heir to the Lordship of Rhudaur. Then she gave him the amulet and left. He set out alone to find the tobm of his ancestor, but was easily trapped by the evil brother mages.

Arfanhil is now 17, stands 6’2” tall and weighs only 160 pounds due to his poor diet. He has unusually light hair for a Dunedain, and grey eyes.

The amulet, Herufea (meaning Spirit Master), is not given any statistics in the module. However, its powers are described. It allows the wearer to

  1. influence the wills of those around him,
  2. see things far away, and
  3. read thoughts.

From Trolls of the Misty Mountains:

Mardrash – Variag (Easterling) mage – 7th level – 30 MA

Mardrash is the Chief Priest of Temple Hengroth, charged with training promising local followers (near the Misty Mountains in Dunland) of the Witch-king in the art of Dark Magic.

Mardrash is uncouth, unkempt, foul-mouthed and ill-tempered. Mardrash hates his Dunlending acolytes and he hates the orcs he is forced to associate with. However, Mardrash manages enough of a veneer of civility to keep relations with a nearby orc village cordial, appreciating the added security the village provides his temple.

From the module, Hillmen of the Trollshaws:

Broggha – Hillman Ranger – 12th level – 20 CO/10 AG/10 MA

By T. A. 1671, Rhudaur is now an evil state. The King, Broggha, has fallen sway to the feminine wiles of a Sauronic agent. Korekalwen, a Silven Elf magically disguised as a Northman woman is casual, suspicious and ruthless, being the Witch-king’s ideal choice for an agent in the Royal Hold of Rhudaur.

Broggha became Targ-Arm, leader of the other Targs, in a recent revolt. Although quite young, he has proven himself a fierce warrior and a wise leader in the Hillman revolt, commanding tremendous respect. He stands over 6’ tall indicating that he has some Dunedain blood. This supports his claim to be descended from an illegitimate daughter of one of the Dunedain Kings, a story which no one disputes in his presence.

As Targ-Arm, Broggha maintains the appearance of a warrior of the old ways. Yet his demeanor is a façade, for Broggha’s dreams are not limited to ruling a free Rhudaur. He longs to be King of lands and peoples far beyond the borders of Rhudaur.

He has one principal magical item:

Cu-Saggha-Brath: The “Turtle Helm” is a gift of Angmar. It is made of steel, with a lining of Fell Beast hide. Its exterior plates of green copper are shaped to form a turtle skin, giving the wearer the appearance of having a hideous turtle head. Its properties are ability to control any one Turtle to 300 feet, regardless of size, adds +10 (+2 in D&D terms) to wearer’s defensive bonus, and allows the wearer to see and hear normally underwater, in a mist, in a fog, or in a rain. The turtle control is useful as there is a 30 foot long Fell Turtle swimming in the hot springs in the deepest chamber of Cameth Brin (hex 2008, Major Town/Fort).

From Hillmen of the Trollshaws module:

Alquawen – Dunadan Bard – 11th level – 10 AG/10 EM/10 MA

Alquawen is the young daughter of the Lord of Caras Fornen (hex 1006 Town/Tower), making her a Dunedain princess. She grew up to be rather spoiled and has a fiery temper. Her blood is pure Dunedain, which explains her noble bearing and imposing features. Alquawen stands 5’11” and has black hair and a fair complexion.

One of the module’s adventures is to rescue Alquawen from her Hillman captors. She was taken captive in an effort to draw out the Arthedain king, Arvelig, whose love of his shrewish fiancé could be exploited. Despite her beauty, the Hillmen hate her; a wicked tongue and her disdain for “lesser Men” does not endear her to her captors.

She wears the Ring of Barahir as an engagement ring.

From Hillmen of the Trollshaws:

Seammu – Hillman-Dunnish fighter – 7th level – 30 CO

Captain of the regular Guard of Cameth Brin (hex 2008, Major Town/Fort). He has seen many rulers come and go. Long ago, he learned it was safest to be despised by all and feared by none. With half-Dunnish, half-Hillman roots, Seammu has maintained a servile and craven attitude that irritates everyone. He is an effective administrator, but has little imagination.

Briam – Hillman Ranger – 7th level – 20 CO/10 EM

When Broggha rose to Targ-Arm of Rhudaur, Briam took over his position as Targ (Chief) of the Moic-Tarra Hillmen. Briam is actually Broggha’s elder cousin and is fanatically loyal. He is quite suspicious of Wilda (Korekalwen), and indeed suspicious of anyone not a Hillman.

Valadan – Lesser Dunadan fighter – 10th level – 30 CO/10 AG

Captain of the Fuintiri, elite guards of Caameth Brin. At 6’9”, Valadan is obviously part-Dunedain; some say he came “from the South”, but Valadan discourages such speculations.

Formerly a mercenary, he was captured by Broggha and later entered his service. It was quickly apparent that this mysterious warrior’s skill at arms was superb, for he proved a might fighter and gained King Broggha’s trust by saving his life in an ambush. Broggha believed in Valadan’s loyalty and was amazed by the stranger’s grace in darkness and skill with magical Symbols. While Valadan is a significant figure in the court at Cameth Brin and is known to pursue beautiful women with unyielding vigor, not even Korekalwen knows Valadan’s true feelings.

(For details on Korekalwen, please examine a previous posting on Broggha.)

Are the modules done – keep checking back to see if you are gonna post anymore , but you haven’t posted anything in almost two weeks

the modules are far from done, remember there are 25 x 8 characters that had to be taken from somewhere

I think Dwalon has just taken a small timeout. If he wants to stop posting, I could step in, since I have many of the modules, plus two of the compendiums of “Lords of Middle Earth” where all characters that ever appeared in Tolkiens or ICE publishings are listed, though not in such great details as in the modules.

Hey, go for it. I am enjoying them.

I agree

This is great, keep up the good work

I loved the ICE rolemaster and MERP series. Like many of the others have posted here, I also ‘misplaced’ mine during several house moves over the years :o This is great for reminiscing about excellent games and the various source books that added great flavour and were also a good read on the side.

Adrian

I’ll chime in and say I have loved reading them too, since I never experienced MERP. I’ve already named a Rhu cmdr Wilda in honor of this thread.

OK Bernd, sounds like you’re up to bat, chop chop.

Marendil Rhudainor - Dunadan fighter – 12th level – 30 CO

Serves as Captain of the Tirthon, a Dunadan beacon tower. The location is extremely unpopular for military personnel to serve at due to its proximity to the dangerous and dreaded forest, Yfelwood. There are dark things held deep within the Yfelwood from the days of Morgoth that seek to be freed. This is the underlying goal of the module named, Dark Mage of Rhudaur.

Marendil is a member of the third branch of House Rhudainor. Once part of the Greater Nobility of Rhudaur, most of his relatives are now living in genteel poverty in Cardolan. Marendil is small in stature for a Dunadan noble, and although he is a capable soldier with a sure and steady manner, Marendil’s intellect is sluggish. He has proved himself a solid, if uninspired, warrior well suited to the command of a small fortress. Marendil strikes observers as dull, and his ability to inspire respect and obedience might benefit if he paid more attention to polishing his fine suit of half-plate armor, his heavy hand ax, and his repartee.

Ethacali – Easterling (Logoth tribe often called the Wain Easterlings) Evil Magician – 17th level – 10 CO/40 Mage

In the module, Ethacali is the Dark Mage of Rhudaur, which the module is named after. His goal is to free the demonic evils in Yfelwood for Sauron’s future use. In order to do this, he must first defeat the troops who reside at the Tirthon so that he can freely search the wood.

Allowed to learn magic, Ethacali quickly became frustrated by the limited knowledge his tribe had. He departed to find greater teachers, following a path that led him to the Orc-holds on the borders of Mordor, thence to the lair of the Necromancer, and finally to Carn Dum in Angmar. Propelled by his tireless and quenchless search for arcane knowledge, his complete detachment from any sense of morality, and his uncanny knack of picking the winning side in the endless internecine power struggles in the counsels of Darkness, Ethacali has rising rapidly in the ranks of evil. Although far from the most powerful, Ethacali is among the Witch-king’s favorite henchmen.

Ethacali wears dark brown robes (better for not requiring the removal of bloodstains) and travels with a considerable collection of books, fancying himself an intellectual. The Easterling has a disarmingly bland demeanor, carefully cultivated; it is an often fatal error to underestimate him.

I am finding myself distracted in a myriad of ways. If anyone would like to take over presenting MEPBM characters into the world of ICE’s Middle-earth, please feel free to.

From the Module „Raiders of Cardolan“

In this module we find four ME PBM characters.

Paddro and Sispar (co 20, ag 10, ma 10) are just minor NPCs, they are lvl. 4 and 6 rangers and followers of a major NPC called Cennaigh, who claims the throne of Saralainn (a Cardolan province) from Lanaigh (see above) and in fact is a henchman of the Witch King. As as funny side note, Paddro is mute because he had his tongue removed while Sispar is deaf as he had his ears cut off for some unknown misdeed in service of the Witch King. Individually challenged, they are acting perfectly as a team. It remains a mystery to me why these two have been chosen as Rhudaur characters while there are several other, more prominent characters in this module.

Abdahkil (lvl. 6 Haradan Animist - 30 ma) belongs to the crew of a pirate ship commanded by an Umbarian captain which leads an expedition into the Eryn Vorn ( the peninsula represented by the hexes 0916, 1014 and 1015) to build a stronghold for a Sauronic cult. He is described to be extremely avaricious and lazy. He owns an amulet of undead control to use the mewlips in the area for his tasks. This trinket obviously did not make it into the PBM.
Abdahkil has a bodyguard of three orcs, one of which is Hukor (30 co), a mere lvl. 3 scout.
How Abdahkil and Hukor made it into the service of the Ice King (the first of which usually a shortlived one, as most of the time he has to free his character slot for a 40 p agent) will stay the secret of the game designers.

From the Module „Pirates of Pelargir“

In this module we find five ME PBM characters.

Ingar (lvl. 5 Black Numenorean Warrior – 20 co 10 em) is one of the four lieutenants of the pirate captain Gedron (who does appear in the 2950 scenario). He is described to be a handsome man and a skilled sailor, but also a coward when it comes to fighting and prone to getting drunk at any occasion.

Haruth do Ramam (lvl. 10 Haradan Fighter – 40 co 10 ag) is the hetman (chief, mayor?) of the town of Sook Ada. He appears as the employer of the player characters, offering a bounty for ending the pirate threat.

Shamara sut Katub (lvl. 9 Haradan Animist/Healer – 10 em 20 ma) is the high priestess of Sook Ada, and thus also a counsellor and official judge in all questions of law. Her role is to support the PCs in their quest.

Yezmin (lvl. 3 Haradan Ranger – 10 co 10 ag 10 em) is, amazingly, one of the player characters that are offered if people don’t roll their own (we never ever played with pre-manufactured characters and I know no-one who did). She was raised by her father to be a hunter for he had no sons, thus very emancipated by Haradrim standards.

Rozilan (lvl. 1 Black Numenorean Animist – 10 em 30 ma) is also a player character. She is described as attractive 19 year old girl who was supposed to marry a Gondorian noble by their umbarian family to seal a trade agreement. But the noble died in an accident a week before the marriage and instead of returning home, Rozilan decided to begin a life of adventure (I bet Drew likes to hear that, because I know he is in love with her, since he ferociously prevented me from retiring her in one game). Somehow she must have fallen under the sway of Ren the Unclean and also quickly have gained some skill…

Besides the fact that in the past 3 DS games I’ve played, lowly Roz started with a very useful spell, I like looking at her character portrait. <g>

Btw, Gedron is the name of a starting 2950 Corsair character as I recall.

From the Module „Gates of Mordor“

In this module we find three ME PBM characters.

Gaurhir ( lvl. 10 demon-werewolf, mage – 10 ag 30 ma) is the “end-boss” in this module. He is a demon-werewolf and a lower maia, twisted into evil by Morgoth in the first age. He died at the end of the second age but was revived and has gained magical knowledge since then. He has been ordered by Sauron to seize the former Gondorian fortress of Durthang and to breed a special tribe of orcs, the scara-hai. These orcs have the ability to turn into wolves.
Gaurhir carries the Staff of Bronze which is a x4 powerpoint multiplier and can be used to draw a line of fire to defend it’s bearer.

Baltab (lvl. 5 half-troll warrior-mage – 30 co ) is one of Gaurhir’s lieutenants who commands the garrison of scara-hai at the tower of Barad Perras. He is half troll half easterling and besides of being a formidable warrior he also has some magical knowledge. He bears a giant two-handed mace carved out of a single piece of malachite (did not make it into PBM).

Virsh (lvl. 5 scara-hai scout – 20 ag 10 em) is another lieutenant and head of the scouts of the scara-hai. He is skilled in stealth (!) and manufacturing poisons. He has a special leather armor that contains several sharp and poisoned metal pieces which can be pulled out and thrown like daggers.

The leader of the scara-hai is a lvl 10. orc warrior called fha-korlash and not appearing in the PBM…
