I’m curious. Looking back at my last 10 or so games, the longest running, best played (both sides), and ones with the fewest missed turns were the 1 week games.
The company will only run 1 at a time, though. I don’t fully understand why. I don’t doubt Clint’s reasoning for offering only 1 at a time, I’m curious as to why people prefer the 2 week games…?
In most of my 2 week games, all the planning is done on the first 3 days after a turn is run and then the last 3 days before the next turn is run. What are we/you all doing inbetween? I know that I’m dealing with my other games that run on alternating weeks…and waiting for the next turn to run… All this waiting inbetween has seemed to me to lower the quality of play. It doesn’t seem to give teams extra time to plan more intricate or better coordinated strategies - it gives teams time to lose interest, forget what’s going on, even forget the turn is being run (every Monday is different than this or that…which? Monday…??..). All this waiting inbetween seems to motivate those of us who are bored to add another game or so to our slate, thus confusing our plotting even more inbetween turns being run.
Some might say they simply haven’t the time in their busy life to run a 1 week nation - and that’s an honest and true answer if they’re only in One 2 week game. But for those of us in at least 2 or more games, what are the good reasons to prefer the 2 week game?
I guess I plan very similar to you, player, having basicly filled out my orders the same day after I receive my pdf IF I get the chance. The reason I however would not join in a 1wk’e would be that the spare time I have for ME planning varies a lot from week to week, and I like to give my wife the impression that many things comes before ME (which some things do too ;)). I also play in grudge games where we meet face to face and the isn’t time each week for a meeting. I guess the 1wk’e you mention had such good support because only dedicated players would play in a 1wk’e and you therefor not get all the lamers who forgot and/or don’t care much.
I would much prefer 1week turnaround as well but there are so few of them starting that I’ve just gotten used to 2week turnarounds now.
Personally I think Gunboat games should ALL be 1week turnarounds as after all you’ve got no one to talk with so why do you need 2weeks to do your orders ?

I contend that 2 weeks creates a lazy and disinterested player who would otherwise NOT be a “lamer” if they had reason to pay more attention. Some people are just like that, and they crop up to annoy us in all walks of life. I believe it’s actually worse because of the 2 week wait. Consider: using post turns a 2 week game into, actually, Less than a 1 week game. Our technology has increased our productivity such that we are no longer relying on unionized letter carriers and mail sorters to waste that extra week of our time. Isn’t the 2 weeks simply a “tradition” that can, frankly, be dispensed with…?

…and when a 1 weeker (like 139 currently requiring players) IS finally offered…I at least have more often than not filled my available gameing slots with those dreary and dragging 2 week games and thusly can’t take on any more… If I wasn’t a reasonably decent teammate, I’d drop Two 2 week games and sign up for every 1 weeker that came up…drat.
You need dedicated people to play a one week game. And if you get a toolbox as a teammate, well, it makes working with said person that much less enjoyable.
One week games are much better suited to DEDICATED grudge teams with reliable players who COMMUNICATE regularly.
1 Week games are for people who want to play, in a week everybody has time enought to plann his turn.
For me it’s more interesting to see the nation moving every week than every 2 weeks. It also enchances one’s perception of what is critical and needs more urgency, and promoves one’s individual skill, inside the team. It requires more initiative from oneself.
Jeppe is full of it! Brad, is it just me or did we try to get the danes to play a one week grudge and they couldn’t handle it. guess coordinating by e-mail like everyone else is tooooo hard…
I only play two weekers because its rare that a one-week is taking set ups.
I prefer 2-week games even though I dislike the large time interval between turns and would prefer quicker feedback. But I would rather play in four 2-week games than two 1-week games for the simple reason that it increases my chances of participating in a really enjoyable and exciting game.
That may sound dumb; but the few 1-week games I’ve played have all been unenjoyable for me for one reason or another (got stomped early, had unpleasant teammates, etc.). That was probably due only to coincidental bad luck – but that’s my entire point: more games, more chances for a good one.
At this time, I strongly prefer the Gunboat games and agree entirely that Gunboat and 1-week turn-arounds go hand in hand. So if a 1-week GB game were offered, I would not hesitate to sign up for it.
1-week games are definitely suited to players who communicate consistently, but they seem to either encourage it or attract those who are predisposed.
That’s not without exception – Brad and I shared a teammate who viewed all communication as a personal affront – but in general, the bar seems pretty high.
Worth trying for any experienced PBMer with the inclination.

Yeah, well I got him in one of my current 2 week games also…so those players, as I said above, simply exist, no different than the idiot trying to buy his morning coffee in front of my line with pennies and nickles… Mind you, we rose up and lynched him out of our 2 week game, so it’s all candles and cokes and hand-holding sing-a-longs now…
Mike, I don’t believe those Jeppe Danes were, like, born yet when we were rallying for that game. Might have been Ulrik we were bothering…?
I forward an idea for a challenge: Those guys play 3 or 4 nations each - Come the spring, we grab Wade and one of the others and give them an ultimatum…
Er Mussy: I agree, everybody has enough time during a week to fill in orders. But filling in the orders in most games are what takes the least of the time. First of all there is all the infogathering and looking through teammates pdfs, but the biggest time taker is the communication and coordination. THAT takes more time then e.g. I have in some weeks when there is a lot of other things to do. I think ME players comes in two basic groups. One group that can use time on ME as the first thing and one group that has things to do before being able to spend time on ME. And as Nimdraug says, some including me prefer to be in 2 2wk’ers over 1 1wk’er.
Player/Crazy Ivan: Hehe… I know one thing for sure. The Jeppe Danes has not been offered to play you in the 2 years since I hatched. We are playing Ulrik Bisgaard’s team at the moment but would certain be interested in playing you. I just hope game 96 is over before the both of you pass off due to old age (and yes I am full of it). Player, I am not sure is your last sentence is a challenge to Danish Vikings or what, but we are really to cane you after game 96 ends.
Yes, grudgeteam Danish Vikings consists of Per, Tommy and me. As said we are playing Ulrik and Michael Bisgaard and two other danes named Jesper and Anders in game 96 as FP. Turn 4 is coming up so it will take some time (I bet Ulrik will post here soon ;)) But when game 96 is over we will certainly be looking for opposition. 1wk ? - let us discuss that if a game between us ever comes up
Most of 2 weeks games, players comunicate last days before turn is beign processed, mainly because they have more games to think about in nearest dates to be processed, and that is fact I have “suffered” in 6 2week games I have played in UK and more than 15 in Spanish Scenario.

Clint,
Just wondering if you managed to find a final player ? I’m just getting impatient waiting for the start of this game so apologises if this appears pushy.
