RD: the attraction of 2950 was to be able to play the characters from The
Hobbit and Lord of the Rings: not only Saruman, but Galadriel, Boromir,
Theoden et al. So far so good, but Tolkien speaks of the Riders of Rohan
bringing 6000 cavalry to the Pelennor Fields
How often did they do that? Or was that just the
grandest battle of all time? Did it happen within the
first 10 turns…??? Would it not be possible to
build towards that, knock off the enemy in your
neighbourhood, and then assemble a SINGLE ONE TIME huge
force as such for a grand, worthy of centuries worth of
folklore, battle…???
Or do we just want it right now, point-click
and conquer before I get bored............??
Again, I've never played the scenario, but am looking
forward to branching out of my 1650 apprenticeship....

Brad Brunet

RD: I don't think that any nation in the original 2950 could ever raise 6000
cav (unless perhaps they were runaway winners!). The idea of giving both
sides more pops in WotR is so that nations can, as you say, BUILD up to a
big total. Only some of the DS get a few extra starting troops and gold,
nothing massive. Sauron had been building up troops and supplies for his
war for years, so this modest boost to the DS is fully justified. It
certainly isn't a case of, 'I want it all and I want it now.'

Richard.

Dog Lord, game 101 and Dragon Lord, game 88. I may still have the
pdfs if you'd like to see them. Even before the games became runaways
I was fielding and using overall armies of 4000-5000 troops, mostly HC
st/st, and recruiting 800-1600 troops per turn to replace ongoing
combat losses. There were other nations that were raising similar
amounts of troops. In 101, I would send out a 2000+ HC juggernaut
from Morannon every second to third turn (conjure mounts and all that)
plus a similar effort from the former Woodmen major towns in Mirkwood.
Our game 88 cloud lord would raise only HC in mithril/mithril, just
for the shock value of the other side reading the combat reports. He
also got a kick out of sending General Ji Indur into battle after he
was fired from agent actions for a series of embarrassing failures.
Fun games both.
The Noldo, White Wizard, and Duns were close to this in game 85 also.
All were recruiting HC st/st full stop from 2-3 major towns every
turn as were several of the dark servants.
cheers,
Marc

to know what the market situation was in these games. I suspect prices were
