A review of TT - Spoilers

The films are very true to
the books in every way...

Clearly I need to reread the book becasue I don't remember Eomer being banished or him coming back to lift the sige of Helm's Deep. I really don't remember a fight with worg riders, Aragorn being swept over a cliff into a river....

I don't remember the ents first refusing to go to war, then being tricked by Merry into seeing the devistation of the orcs.

I don't remember a group of elves showing up at the beginning of the siege of Helm's Deep.

One question for the destractors; could YOU or anyone else you could
name do a better job of making a movie of these books we love?

David

As I said, I understood the need for the changes in the first movie/book. Take out stuff that doesn't move the story along. Move stuff around to spread out the talk. Change the action scenes to keep the audience's attention.

What concerns me most about the changes in the second movie is that I don't see the need. I am concerned that some of these changes will lead to even bigger changes in the next movie. What did the "Aragorn swept down river" add to this movie? Nothing I could see. So, why add it? I'm affraid to guess. Did they simply need more scenes with Arawin? I could think of a dozen better ways to have done that. Why go to Osgiliath? Why not just have Frodo and Sam up on the stair to Cirth Ungol with the army of Mordor pouring out of the Mogul Vale off to sack all of Gondor like in the books?

RD: Yes, re-read the book, because I for one remember that bit!

or him coming back to lift the sige of Helm's Deep. I really don't

RD: Yeah, but the fight with wargs (not worgs, you've been watching too much Star Trek)is great cinema! I mean, you actually see the real horses and the cgi wargs crash into eah other.

Not Aragorn being swept over a cliff - that's a totally unnecessary intrusion when so much has been cut out.

What did the "Aragorn swept down river"

add to this movie?

My guess is this: In the first movie a similiar thing happens to
Gandalf. Those who didnt know the story, were very shocked that a
major character died. Doesnt usually happen in movies these days. In
fact, during FOTR one girl actually almost cried when he died!

So, I suspect it was another attempt to generate a reaction from
the "non-read" members of the audience. Suspecting a similiar
situation to Gandalf, that Aragorn would end up dead as well...

RD: I fear this could be overdone. We've seen the Fellowship mourning Gandalf, then Aragorn Legolas & Gimli mourning Merry & Pippin, and after that Legolas, Gimli & Eowyn mourning Aragorn. In each case the "dead" character shows up alive. Still to come we have Aragorn etc mourning Frodo when the Mouth of Sauron displays Sting and the mithril shirt. I hope nobody in the audience starts to think "oh no, not again." I hope very much that the film trilogy is big enough - in every sense - to carry that many similar scenes.

Anyway, having had time to reflect on it, TT is the best film I've ever seen, regardless of any nit-picking.

  Richard.

<snip>
In fact, during FOTR one girl actually almost cried when he died!

What do you mean "almost"???

I've seen FOTR five times now and each time Gandalf falls down the
pit, I cry....I can't help it!

I also had a tear in my eye when Aragorn fell off the cliff....

Having read the LOTR books a couple of times, I think this makes me
pretty sad...I'll shut up now!
