A three hour tour.....

I’m trying to determine the relative risk involved in traveling through ‘ocean’ hexes as opposed to ‘coastal’ hexes. I know that there is some chance of encountering a storm or being ‘lost at sea’ when in an ‘ocean’ hex. I don’t know if these are the same or separate events. I believe there is also a greater risk of having an encounter when in an ‘ocean’ hex. Can anyone provide more insight into the risk involved? Thanks in advance.

I’m not sure of the exact “percentage” of risk, I am sure someone can probably answer that.

In regards to the open hexes though, you will certainly encounter either a storm or a sea monster. I believe the risk of the encounter happening is in relation to how far you travel. I’ve found that short hops are usually ok, but in one game as Harad, when trying to go about 12 hexes, I spent three consecutive turns getting lost at sea… so I havent tried to make a run that long since.

The odds are cumlative from one hex to another. So, “cuting the angle” from Vamag to the coastal waters around the Harad island would be a “3x"chance of an encounter. “x” for the first hex, plus 2"x” for the second hex. If you go three hexes you now have a “6x” chance. Four hexes “10x”.

Like yourself, my experience is no problem with one or two hex blue sea voyages. Back in the GSI days, when drops were not filled bu the company after the early game, surviving ships of dropped nations became pirates and the odds of a pirate encounter went way up.
