Basically you have 23 individual nations and everyone is Neutral in the
game. After turn 25 (I'd up it a little for this game) you get a vote to
end the game. Game 68 (see the forum) is going all guns blazing - so you
get to play the Noldo helping the Rhudaur attack the dwarves...

I'm playing in Game 68 as the Long Rider, the game is at present on
turn 5 and so far there has been a lot of action.
In the NW we have Rhu/No/Dw against WK/Cardy/Arth/Duns.
Mirkwood sees the DrL against the Woodies with Sinda building up.
NGo last turn attacked SGo.
In Rhun the Eoth have kick out the Easterlings but have about run out
of steam.
In Mordor we have the FK about to lay waste to the DkL's last MT.
Also there is a FK/IK/DoL allience in place against it seems the
DkL/CL.
No one knows anything about Harad or the Corsairs.
Now myself i've attacked the DrL/NGo/Eoth/DoL.
Basically it is a free for all, you make/break your own alliences as
you seem fit. The gist of it is for me to still be in the game come
turn 20, that in itself will be a victory for me.
I'm very much enjoying this game as it is so unusal, one thing you
have to be aware of though is that as you can't change alliegance
only the neutral arties count.
When this game finally finishes I will then be looking for another of
this type
Seems like a VERY odd game to me. What do most player
play for? VPs? Teke over the world single handedly?

Some just play for the sheer chaos, and the joy of the backstab.
I'm currently in game 68, and I don't think I'll sign up for another. It
is VERY open diplomatically... TOO open for my tastes. While some might
enjoy that, it seems like the temptation to backstab just for the sake
of backstabbing is just too much for some players.
There's a bit of the old Avalon Hill Diplomacy boardgame style of play.
Unfortunately, some seem to believe that, since the old boardgame is
called Diplomacy, that is what diplomacy is all about in every game.
Anyway, if you like that kind of game, then I'd suggest joining this new
variant. (It certainly is fast-paced and surprises lurk in every turn
results, though most of them aren't pleasant.) Me? I prefer a more
stable set of alliances than this game seems likely to provide.

In short, I strongly recommend giving an all-neutral game a go, with
one or two provisos.
* As Mike Mulka has said, the game is very open diplomatically. If you
don't think you can write a LOT fo diplomatic messages each turn, then
do yourself a favour and don't play. You can't keep quiet and survive.
* The diplomacy is pretty cut-throat. Do not play this varient if you
are easily upset or take being stabbed ion the back (or even the
front) badly.
* Bear in mind that the game makes no pretence to be balanced. Some
nations clearly have an advantage. But, to be honest, nobody ever said
that the original boardgames of Diplomacy was balanced, but there's
always fun you can have playing Italy / Rhudaur
Play this game for fun and for the sheer HELL of it. Also play it if
you miss the cut-throat, double-dealing of PBM games from yesteryear.
As an experienced PBM Diplomacy player, the best
players are those who stick to a set of alliances
until the late game. Only when a significant play is
possible, should you sink the knife in the back.
I have found that if you are part of a losing
coalition, but have not suffered too much, or hold a
strategic position, a player from a currently winning
alliance may break ranks and ask you to join him
against X.
Some just play for the sheer chaos, and the joy of
the backstab.
