I saw it first! It's 3:48 am and I just got back home. I only had to stand
in line an hour and a half.
Something terrible happened, though. JUST as the climactic end battle was
beginning, the movie shut off and all the lights in the theater came on!
Fortunately, the staff got the film restarted after about 10 minutes . . .
but man . . . that was scary.
Oh, by the way, the movie is great great and really great (excuse my limited
vocabulary as it IS almost 4 in the morning)!!
I hope you all enjoy it as well as I did! I'll be enjoying it again
Thursday.
Russ

Although I haven't seen the film yet, I know the sort of things you
mean and I can see where you're coming from. However, the real crunch
is, how does it stand as a film? Leaving aside the question of being
true to the book (no film of a book ever really satisfies the fans of
the book), is the film enjoyable as a piece of cinematography?
I'm willing to go with Peter Jackson on what he thinks will make a
good film - after all if I want the events of the book, exactly as
they appear in the book, then I can read the book (again). What I want
when I go to the cinema is an absorbing experience which tells a
story, has action, good acting and characterisation. If the film works
on that level, then (for me) it will be a success.
I have to say that I'msurprised by my views on this, before the first
film came out I was prepared to be very disappointed. The fact that
Peter Jackson has resisted the temptation to Hollywood-ise the book -
(worse still, can you imagine a Disney version?) and his attention to
any number of small details (the Ring of Barahir, Elven clasps from
Lothlorien etc) has led me to revise my opinion on all of this.
Colin (who'll have more views when he's seen the film on Thursday)

RD: I think it is a GREAT film - and I don't use the term lightly.
I agree with David there are more deviations from the book, but, it is not possible to be true to the letter of the book otherwise the film would run for three months rather than three hours. Jackson has to make the film stand on its own merits and he certainly succeeds at that. I can't wait to go and see it again to pick up any bits I missed - there is just sooo much to see!
The wargs, trolls and all the battle scenes were just brilliant. Sure Jackson over-dramatised some aspects but that's a small price to pay.
I hear that in the final film there is a cat-fight between Arwen and Eowyn over Aragorn. Arwen is hiding her true identity as one of the elf-archers who (in the film only) came to help out at Helm's Deep.
