An idea on the game certificates

(rolling eyes). Let's see. I have a very good player. Where is my
TEAM likely to benefit the most - having them play the Woodmen, or
having them play Southern Gondor? C'mon. The best games are ones
where there is very good play in the key positions on both sides.
Show me a game where the Noldo and Northern Gondor drop while the
Cloud Lord and Dark Lts. are top tier, and I'll predict a turn 15 dark
win. One of the disturbing trends I've noticed is that an increasing
fraction of the games seem to be very lopsided and very short. Email
and pdf exchanges allow teams to coordinate very effectively, and if
one team does this and the other does not the results are quick and
dull. The random allotment of the top spots will only make this
worse. I am playing almost exclusively grudge and standby positions
largely because of this. I have a clue what I'm getting into.

This is an excellent point. But is allocating based on the current VP system necessarily the only or the best way to prevent this?

You need some system to encourage capable folks to take challenging
positions, keep vets in the strong positions, and keep new folks out
of the ones where they will get hammered.

If you want to get vets to play the Woodmen, you can rely on noble
sentiment - or you can give them a very tangible and concrete reward,
like cold hard cash or the position of their choice the next go
around. This can be done with victory conditions assessed relative to
the record.

Wanna bet which method will get more folks taking nations like North
Gondor?

You lost me somewhere. How does giving players extra starting character advantages if they win put pros in North Gondor? Maybe you're right, could you restate your position?

I think if we revised the way in which you receive VPs, then rankings relative to nation records (after one is established) is a good idea, for fairness considerations. Until then I suspect it would only amplify the problems in the current system.

Nothing personal, but I'm would always like to play a
safe behind the lines nation over a front-liner.

Each turn cost me the same (regardless of how bad my
nation is in failing to afford new people), and its no
fun seeing pop centre after pop centre burnt, and
character after character killed.

If I was into pain, I would be a farmer. Or get
married again.

If I had to play a front line nation, then I would
like a chance to fight back.

Seeing my score at 1500 instead of 400 doesn't help me
balance my budget, or stop the incoming free armies.
I'm still dead.

This is an excellent point. But is allocating based on the current

VP system

necessarily the only or the best way to prevent this?

Absolutely not. It puts veterans in spots like the Cloud Lord, which
is half of what you need. But the individual VCs mislead newbies, and
there is an active disincentive to run nations North Gondor.
To put the work into fixing it, though, there has to be some reward to
make it worth the bother.

I don't like giving a starting character edge to top three players;
they shouldn't need that. I do like giving someone who runs the
dragon lord much better than average their pick of positions the next
go around.

Different styles for different folks. I sympathize;
the only equalizer is that if you have a good team behind you it is
less likely that you'll get rolled.

And the reward is that you get to run the Cloud Lord the next go
around
