Army hex movement and intercept

860 always moves before 850 the two extra movement points on a 860 goig off before the 850 even moves.

Handy to know that.

I always used to think that you could not block sideways movement and never saw this for an age.

But now I have the turns showing it, things of course can and do change.

So you always have a 50% chance of pinning.

Oh do I have the turns, yes but in the midle of moving to New Zealand so not a god time to look for them

interesting thread!

Never seen it (random movement after day 1), I admit I thought it was only on day 1 and after that it was all simultaneous. And I love armies too. Still, if people reckon they have the turns, it must be true. I assume they mean they have both turns (which shows that the other play didn’t issue a home movement for example). There are also other reasons why one army might catch another army, troop type and food supplies.

As for 860s moving before 850s, I used to think that too. I don’t have the turns but I recall a game sometime ago where we did have access to both sets of turns after the game end and this was proved to be false. Of course, these days, who issues 850s anyway?

Now how long ago did you have those turns from for as we all know the game seems to change and many a year ago I would say you could not pin.

Stuart Taft told me on the phone back in 1990’s that 860 does not come before 850. Everyone should believe as they choose though

He told me the same thing at around the same time. That the two extra MPs were numbers 13 & 14. Since then I have seen cases that could only be explained if, sometimes, they are zero and thirteen. The mystery of this game is one of its attractions.

Well there has to be a zero to explain some movement patterns in the game.

But as you say let the players play with things and chose what they like.

Mechanics do change though over time, though not to much.

2 cents…

i once played a few games with programming guys. these guys collected data for everything, and then broke it down. data crunchers, first and foremost.
of big interest was the 3 cursers vs 3 curses shootout we all know and love, unless your in it. who gets to curse first, and who gets to curse last. they also took a long hard observation on camping.
what they believed (unless you see the code, nothing is certain) is that all 25 nations are assigned a action #, randonly, everyturn. they also belived the randon number generator used by the program wasn’t very good.
as it applies to movement…
so all first day/impulse movement occurs in unison, and then the randomly assigned action number was applied. probably the strongest evidence to support his point:
3 fire king armies try to invade 3024 from 3124, and 1 n gondor army tries to get into 3124 from 3024. having three armies does not give you a 3 in 4 chance. i think everybody has huge info on this fact.
now, a dk lts army, a fire king army and an ice king army try to invade 3024 from 3124. 1 n gondor army tries to invade from 3024 into 3124. the evils have a 3 in 4 shot of winning. this is pretty standard procedure for a lot of vet grudge teams. not implying good, just vet teams.
the same with cursing, agent vs agent actions, and theres some basis for this function in camping, with a slight twist. but thats for another time.
do i have proof? nope…but guys that do programming for a living believed, i didn’t argue. on this issue, i am out of my depth in a street puddle.
as for the force march thing, i think it was stated by gsi that you picked up 2 extra moves at the end, marching into darkness, rather then by sunrise. again, no evidence. but gospel by a few guys who don’t take gospel easily.
and if we don’t have evidence, i’d rather not argue with anybody about who has the best idea / imaginary friend.
hope it helps, and makes for a better game.

Like all things we all agree to disagree.

So we play as we do and I think those who win may be right and those who lose wrong.

Or is my assumption that those who misuse the orders should still win.

I prefer to do my own study and all the turns I have looked at support my own thoughts, but of course others may have other views.

It is up to each of you to play it as you like and tinker with the game.

However having managed to discover a number of the quirks of the game, I did not talk to the guys with access to the original source code.
