He's far from fat and lazy. He's an everyman. He represents the simple
fellow who would rather stay at home. He enjoys the simple things in
life. On his deathbed Thorin Oakenshield tells him that the world would
be a better place if his values were held by more, above the alternative
- hoarded gold.

RD: Gosh Laurence, it must be Sunday if your going all moralistic on us.
You're right about Thorin's dying words. But it didn't stop Bilbo filling
his saddlebags with treasure so he could live in comfort if not luxury when
he got home. Any fool can enjoy the simple things in life when they have
plenty of money! And when the money ran out, he retired to Imladris and
ponced off the Elves. Me, cynical? Nah.

Bilbo is/was a good pilferer, the Dwarves kept missing stuff.

Pick-pocketing comes under Agent skills, I believe.

I believe someone never read the Hobbit and his image of Bilbo is that
of a retired hobbit, fighting every single moment of his life resisiting the
effects of the One Ring. Remember what the ring did to the other hobbit ?

Next thing we know, we want a detailed rpg system in ME.

I think YOU should re-read the Hobbit pal. Bilbo only picked one pocket in
his entire career, a troll's, when he got caught and had to be rescued by
Gandalf. Not a promising start to a career as an agent! Bilbo found the
One Ring by chance, or, as Gandalf said, the Ring found him. No theft
involved there. Finally Bilbo nicked the Arkenstone from Smaug's hoard but,
as there was nobody around to stop him, it was hardly a difficult task.

Bilbo DID successfully accomplish another agent action: he rescued the
Dwarves from giant spiders, and rescued the Dwarves again, this time from
Thranduil's Elves. But, on both occasions Bilbo made use of the One Ring,
without which his dexterity, ingenuity and occaisonal burst of courage would
have availed him nothing.

Richard.
