And when the money ran out, he retired to Imladris and
ponced off the Elves.

He wrote "There and Back Again" while he was there. A worthy task, not
lazy - surely you don't begrudge him his comfortable retirement.

didn't he get frodo to finish the book ? And the songs he wrote were based
on other people (not all that glitters is gold), or had ranger help.

Oh yeah, when he fled the shire, he took from the shire its most valuable
item (mainly the mithril armour that was kept in a community house). Since
Bilbo didn't make the item, didn't supply the goods for its making, and the
person who 'gave' it to him, died soon after the event, I'm sure it was all
legal (like gollum and getting the one-ring as his birthday present).

Not the most valuable item in the Shire. Most of the hobbits would have
swapped it for a pouch of pipe weed or a fireworks display.

RD: The mithril armour was made by the Dwarves in Erebor (the Kingdom under
the Mountain). It was seized by Smaug along with the rest of the Dwarven
hoard. With the death of Smaug, Thorin Oakenshield reclaimed his kingdom
and his hoard, to which the mithril armour belonged. Thorin gave the
mithril armour to Bilbo as the first instalment of payment for his services.
Bilbo later LENT the mithril armour to the Mathom-house (a museum of
unwanted gifts) so he was quite entitled to reclaim it when he needed it.
Neither the community nor any other hobbit had any use for it anyway. Yes,
it WAS all perfectly legitimate and above board!

You can't compare that with Gollum who murdered Deagol for a gold ring.
Gollum! Now he MIGHT have made a good agent, starting his career with a
murder and a theft, then hiding in the depths of Goblin-gate, where he
murdered and ate small goblins as a change from fish. Gollum also possessed
natural stealth, even without the Ring!
