Artifacts and spells in battle vs pc

If there is no defending army present...do the spells and artefacts get used
against the pop center then instead ? I don't think so but I'm unsure.

Cheers

Exactly right. Any army combat in the hex will take the full effect of
spells and artifacts (NPC's too, if present, which of course includes
dragons!) in its first round, and none of the above will affect the pc
combat. Just make sure the sacrificial army is large enough not to be
overrun when the enemy enters the hex -- which if you pc has fortifications
to add in, won't take much.

Someone refresh my memory.

if enemy army w/spells and combat art attack to capture your pc w/a

defensive

army on it, do the spells and artifacts hit for only ONE round of battle?
ie. count only in first round vs the army?

so the army "soaks up" the effect of the offensive (and defensive?) spells
and artifacts and thus when the enemy army attacks to capture the pc (same
turn that defensive army dies), they are attacking "without" the magic and
artifacts"?
