Automagic

If you CSV format then that's not the Automagic format. Just follow the
instructions and we can use it. The program we have at our end needs a VERY
specific format to read it - part of the reason it's taken so long to get
here (we tried many shortcuts but they did not work, that's why you need the
"no" in the movement now.)

If you read the instructions for Automagic it explains all that you need to
know. So the Naming convention is very specific as well (for the above
reasons).

To make it easier (Sam and I had a 3 hour chat about it yesterday planning
it all) we're intending to change the format to:

menn.GGG (where nn = nation number and GGG is the game number eg me01.097
would be the woodmen in game 97)

Clint

Clint,
FYI, there aren't instructions within the file for how to manually create an
auto-input file. Most of the formatting requirements for the auto-input file are very
specific, (so that MAIN won't crash), and aren't specfied anywhere but in my notes.
(Of course Sam and Colin know them, since that's where I got them.)
If you want people to be able to attempt to manually create a correctly formatted
auto-input file, you'll need to make that info available, either on the website, or I
can do so within the Excel file, if you wish.

Mike,

I have used the automagic thing and it seems pretty neat, but I get an
input error when I use it. The file comes out, but it won't send through
Eudora. (might be that I am using too old a version of eudora?) The
question I have is can I maunally send the file through Eudora?

Clint, *please* consider making this information available, so those of us
who either don't run Windows or simply prefer our own tools can have the
chance to submit in the format you want.

Made my first try with Automagic. To be honest, I
wasn't happy. Guidance on the 425 and 725
orders was not useful and I ended up guessing on how
they should work. Had to figure out how to defeat
the corporation's security on macros and am going to
have to check with the security folks to make sure
that I didn't violate a dozen rules of conduct in
doing so.

Notwithstanding this, I cannot help but wonder why
we aren't just doing this with a web interface.
Excel is not an easy development platform and working
with the spreadsheet is twice as time-consuming as
working with my usual text file.

I appreciate the thought and effort behind the current
project but I honestly think that Excel will prove to
be an inadequate and troublesome platform.

Do You Yahoo!?
Yahoo! Greetings - send holiday greetings for Easter, Passover
http://greetings.yahoo.com/

Statements that the company has no interest in a web
based product are stupifyingly astounding in the extreme.
I'd sign up for DAILY games using such a thing, I recall
others dreaming of similar things.

1) How many players are there, and out of that, how many are
COMPLETELY postal dependent?

2) Europe STILL charges for internet use based on TIME on
line? That's quite funny, really! And CERTAIN to go the
way of the dodo. 5 years ago I paid by the hour. Now I have
a computer that is 15 times as good and a connection that is
unlimited and 1/4 the cost, and I'm still 2.5 years behind the
times... I'll have to see the "Permanent and Forever Binding
Non-Technology Act" legislation to admit that any statements
along the lines of "the internet would be too expensive" are
rational..(oops, I'm being rude again..

Hasn't the company already committed to differnet fees for
different methods of sending orders? Well, how about:

A Turn Fee
B Email Fee
C Order Entry Fee
D Postal Fee

Web based orders are charged A.
Automagic/MEOW orders are charged A+B.
MY current orders, hand typed non-conformist, are charged A+B+C.
Postal Orders charged A+C+D.

Simple and fair, completely upfront and itemized. I'd
presume at least 50% of players using the web within the first
year, at least.
