RD: The full correct POLITICAL expression is 'The United KIngdom of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland.' This obviously includes Wales & Scotland as
well as all the little islands dotted around the mainland. This does not
include Ireland or any part of it, hence Northern Ireland getting a special
mention as being politically part of the UK.
'Britain' is a rather confusing GEOGRAPHICAL (not political!) expression.
To be clear about what you mean, you should say either 1) 'mainland Britain'
ie, the biggest island of the group including England, Wales and most of
Scotland, or 2) 'the British Isles' which covers all the islands in the
group icluding Ireland.
Here endeth the lesson (g)!
Richard.

An incorrect lesson, though.
Gavin
RD: What is incorrect?
Suggest you check YOUR passport. Look on the cover.
RD: This is getting ridiculous but I'll persevere to try to get a sensible
answer. You said that my 'lesson' was incorrect but failed to say why.
That needled me. Not that you disagreed, but you didn't say WHY.
I've since quoted the Oxford English Reference Dictionary on the subject.
You got a better authority?

You got a better authority?
The British Consulate in Geneva plus a couple of books on the history of
those islands off the north coast of France. Whether better or not is
another question.
I agree, though, with one of your earlier posts: this topic has outrun its
usefulness and life.
