Balrog of Moria and Dragons

we were curious about that as well, so we just killed the Balrog of Moria in Game 22 of 2950. Stephen speak up if you are out there for specifics, but Elrond had a challenge of over 300 and it seemed like he just breathed on the Balrog and he was dead.

And yes we cursed him the turn before and he was still healthy when Elrond beat him up.

As Arthedain I beat up on another dragon a while back, but don't have the specifics other than I was over 250 challenge and didn't lose any health. Other dragon fighters I have seen have always been over 250 and done well.

Seeking the Wise again...

NPC's are the weakest point of my game. Can any of
the Wise answer a few questions for me?

Ever seen a confirmed victory in personal combat over
a dragon or the Balrog of Moria. I want the biggies,
not the Demon of Aglarond or any such.

Will a Sickness/Curses work on a dragon or balrog?
The spell requirements say nothing about NPCs.

Is it worth casting Scry Character on any of these
NPCs? I've heard that it lists their attributes as
100's in every category, but they must have huge
bonuses to their challenge, right?

curious and getting curiouser...

Nick

I had Galadriel at 263 and she died -- challenge aren't guaranteed to
prodcue successful results. OTOH, it was an 11-round fight, so
Khuzadrepa was probably pretty close to Galadriel's level...

How did you know it was an 11-round fight?

Not Stephen, but I still have the .pdf...

"In the Mountains of 2212 a ritual duel began. A large circle was
drawn among the ruins. As the residents of Khazad-dum gathered
around, Elrond, a healthy robed mage stepped forth and called
challenge. In his hands was borne the glowing sword called Anguirel.
In answer, Balrog of Moria, a healthy and dark Maiar Spirit appeared!
The odds could not be calculated by those watching. Elrond caught
Balrog of Moria by surprise and took his life with but a single spell!"

Elrond's challenge rank after the fight was 341, thanks to an
impressive collection of mage artifacts.

The curses didn't give the message about the Balrog not being a legal
target, but since the Balrog still showed up as healthy it's not clear
what effect they had. Perhaps that's a sign that the theory that the
Balrog has more than 100 health is correct - he certainly went down
more easily than we expected, and if he was already weakened (from,
say, 200 to 114) that may have been a factor. Or maybe the curses are
allowed but have no effect.

Nice picture, too.

How did you know it was an 11-round fight?

There's a little note at the end of a challenge report on how many
"minutes" the fight lasted. I'm pretty sure this means combat rounds in the
challenge.

Very, very interesting stories guys. Thanks again.
The Balrog and dragons are defeatable. I wonder if
chosing "combat" through the encounter has any effect
on the outcome.

Last question: Sauron is an NPC. Assuming he could
be located, do you think there is any chance he could
be defeated, or even challenged, by a character?

Has anyone ever tried it? "In the market square, a
healthy Maia stepped forth..." or "... a healthy, a
well-tanned!, Dark Lord stepped forth." Kidding
aside, I would love to know.

Cheers!

I have seen a turn where the player sacrificed a character challenging
His Darkness to see what would happen (all in the name of science!). It
took place as a standard challenge, and the memorable details are that
the onlookers were unable to calculate the odds of the fight, and the
"portrait" of the challenged on the report was simply His Eye.

Not very specific, but I hope it helps.
