Battle of the Five Armies

Okay we're just about to start workin on the newbie game that I mentioned
earlier. The one thing we want to do it tie it in to

1) The books
2) the film

Anyone know a lot about the film? Battles that occur, nations that are
involved, characters etc?

Thanks

RD: the Battle of Five armies appears in 'The Hobbit' not the LoR trilogy
so, if you are sticking closely to that period, 'The Hobbit' is the only
book you need. As far as I know, nobody has ever made a film of 'The
Hobbit' which is quite extraordinary when you consider it's a self-contained
story, therefore much easier to condense into a film than the trilogy.

Oh, the Elven-king wasn't named in 'The Hobbit' but he was of course,
Thranduil. Guess you knew that anyway. I flicked thru 'Unfinished Tales'
tales again looking for further clues, but the only new thing I discovered
(in a footnote) was that the king of the wood-elves (Silvans) at the time of
the Last Alliance was Oropher. Oropher was slain in the assault upon the
'Gates of Mordor' (presumably Morannon). I missed this when designing LA,
oops! Thranduil was Oropher's son and successor.

There is also in Unfinished Tales a mention of the Silvan army in the Last
Alliance campaign suffering grievous losses due to their lack of armour.
Damned if I can find the reference now but it agrees with Tolkien's
description of the elves at Five Armies being archers and spearmen (light
inf).

Hope that helps,

Richard.

The first film is all from Fellowship, so you won't have the epic battles
that you get in the second and third volumes. Peter Jackson supposedly
followed the books closely, taking license only when really necessary. Of
course, only the cast and crew know this for sure. I'm guessing the big
excitement will be the confrontation with the ringwraiths by the river and
some tense moments at the inn. Now, depending on how he did it, the tales
that are told when the company is formed could be actually shown on screen
and provide some nice battle sequences and stuff. I would think the focus
of the battle at the two towers, while not shown on screen until December
2002, would be the perfect conflict to base it around.

Are you REALLY sure that it was the battle of the last
alliance that the silvans got creamed ??? I thought it
was an very earlyfirst age battle (and before they got
decent armour from the dwarves and noldor). Due to
their whipping, the silvans decided that hiding wasn't
such a bad idea.

And that's why the silvans live underground.

thanks

RD: The Silvans didn't take part in any First Age battles, since they lived
too far east and were left behind on the Great Journey.

I didn't say the Silvans got 'creamed' in the LA campaign - depends what you
mean by 'creamed.' They ended up on the winning side but lost about 2/3 of
their number in the campaign due to lack of metal armour. The survivors
marched back to Greenwood (later Mirkwood) before Isildur and his guard of
200.

Despite their losses, the Silvans were still too numerous for the orcs (who
later ambushed Isildur at the Gladden Fields) to dare to attack them.
Woodmen and Silvans came to the battlefield too late to save the Dunedain
but in time to prevent the orcs (who had themselves suffered huge losses)
from despoiling the corpses.

Richard.

Mail - as in a type of armour (plate mail, chain mail,
etc). Not mail as in communication.

thats why I said that I think it was before the
silvans allied with the noldor and dwarves.

Well, I don't know if you count animated films, but there is a Hobbit animated movie.
I've got the tape myself, so I'm certain of this.

What details are you looking for? If you want to know who the 5 armies were, that's
easily answered. I don't recall the names of the Kings, but the armies were...

Dwarves (from Iron Hills)
Elves (from Mirkwood)
Men (from "Laketown")
Goblins (from the north)
Eagles

I don't know how they counted Eagles as a separate army, but there you are.

Mike

I thought it was Wolves and Goblins against Elves, Dwarves and Men....

Eagles out, wolves in :stuck_out_tongue:

I think Richard wants to know the film details like
director etc?

Anyway, ICE once released a board game based on 5
armies and it was cool (unfortunately our postal
system lost the game when I posted it home from Uni).

The map covered the area between the two southern
spurs of Erebor - the ruins of Dale were also
represented. The free player could set up the elves
on the Western spur and the men and dwarves (Khazad!)
on the Eastern spur. All the major characters are
represented, e.g. Thorin and co are based behind the
Erebor gate.

The army of Bolg attacks in several waves (including
an attack from behind the mountain) until the Great
Orc himself appears with his elite guard. Beorn skins
him alive though.

Nice game but very tactical, not grand strategy at
all.

I don't have the book (The Hobbit), but as I stated, I do have the animated movie. I
just re-checked, and the 5 armies are the ones I listed, (with Eagles as the 5th, not
wolves). While the Goblins were indeed riding wolves, it was (after the initial
dissention between the dwarves and elves/men) a battle between the Goblins (riding
wolves) against the other 4 armies.

Nice game but very tactical, not grand strategy at
all.

What details are you looking for? If you want to know who the 5 armies

were, that's

easily answered. I don't recall the names of the Kings, but the armies

were...

Dwarves (from Iron Hills)
Elves (from Mirkwood)
Men (from "Laketown")
Goblins (from the north)
Eagles

I don't know how they counted Eagles as a separate army, but there you

are.

RD: No, I've got everything Tolkien and his son wrote about Middle-earth. I
want the details of the film, please!

I would categorize the animated film as more of an actual cartoon, aimed more at
children. It's more light-hearted, and there is a bit of singing. (While I realize
that the books all had songs in them, I'm hoping that the LOTR movies don't. I'd
rather not see a musical.) That's also true of the Return of the King animated movie
I've got. (I can't seem to find the LOTR animated movie that was made a while ago that
covered the Fellowship and some of the Two Towers.)

I can't decide if it was a mistake not to buy all
those books which dealt with how middle earth was
made, ie aragorn was originally called strider, I
think they even published the abandoned m/e sequel
(set in FA 1000). At least 'lost tales I and II' had
stories that I could read in them.

I looked at a few of the books when they came out,
said 'its all greek to me', and didn't buy them.

I think I can still buy them online, but I prefer to
look at a book before I pay for it.

thanks
