BREE 12.....Worth the read

Greetings,
DO NOT HIT THE DELETE KEY.........
The list has been very quiet recently...........even Laurence' entertaining
ditties have been in short supply........what gives?
I don't put pen to paper often, or should that be, 'digit to keyboard' but
felt that having just read the latest issue of Bree (12) , it was worthy of a
few comments...........
Without reservation I feel this is the best edition to date, Colin, (who
masterfully puts it together) could not do so, if it wasn't for the players,
(You) input........

My comments on the various articles include:
1)BOFA: Having been involved as one of the original play testers (playing the
eminent Mr. Bryn Lloyd, (another bloody Welshman) for this scenario, Sams
overview was accurate and concise...........unfortunately in the playtest I
was denied the Necromancers, 'All important' reveal pop spell, so the Elves
were immune, from a military ko at least........much to my
chagrin...........(but not a financial one;-)
And YES it was one of my recommended inclusions!, along with many others,
most of which seem to have been implemented.............Its now a more
balanced and challenging scenario. Try it!

2)The agent article was informative, (especially to newbies) I could add a
few titbits of my own, but I think I'll hold onto them for a while
longer...........agent based nations are my personal favourite, (with the
program changes making life harder for Ji & company) you need to have that
little 'extra' in your bag of tricks.....Mine have been learnt the hard way,
honed through dedicated years of service to my master, Vicky, I mean
Sauron.......but they work.......one day perhaps............

3)Gunboats on the Anduin:
Definately interested............sign me up immediately Clint, for the
Cloudlord/Doglord combi. OH, I'm not suppose to say that am I!......Nice one
Chris. Lets 'Nike'

4)Victory through the eyes of evil:
I am currently about to embark on another epic, captaining the DS team about
to play this mob.............I've a funny feeling that once again Murazor is
going to have that wicked WK grin on his face, and the freeps the furrowed
brow of defeat!!!! We will even kick off in Winter, just to make it more of a
challenge for ourselves............

Battle of Goblin Gate:
Congratulations bard, but the big question is, Can you play ME? ( or just to
busy playing with your 'organ'

ME:Christmas:
Its getting nearer, and quicker than I would like, and we need to start
organising some firm dates Clint. You know/are aware which I and 4 others
can attend........Pre-booking fees tend to sort the wood from the chaff, and
secure firm commitments...............Dig out the negotiating hat! &
soon........

I agree - this number of Bree was the best so far.
A very good read, worth the long download time!

BOFA: we have run a few games now - and it's looking good. BUT we need
feedback - we have until Dec 16th to get it RIGHT.

Please get in touch with feedback on it! Essential.

Okay if we get around 10 players for this then I will seriously consider it.
2 nations each. I'll get in touch with all the players when I get a list
together. 2 players - 4 positions so far.

Thanks

Sorry about that - we've got it so that it is reasonably efficient our end.
If you don't want to have it by email we can post it to you.

A very good read, worth the long download time!

Don't worry - it wasn't that long! About 4 min.

The worst thing about big emails is that you wont know if it's junk or
not until you've actually downloaded it. Luckily this wasn't.

"How long is it?
That's a rather personal question, Sir!"

Hi,
A couple of people have contacted me to say that they didn't get the
latest Bree. One person has never seen a copy ... Can people please
let Harlequin know if this is the case, rather than me?

However ...

Issues 1-10 can be downloaded from http://www.middleearthgames.com/
(click on "house rules, links, articles etc). I don't think Harlequin
have uploaded issues 11 & 12 yet, so I've just put them up at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/newsfrombree/files/ This is a Yahoo
group so you'll need to join just as you would this group.

Colin.

We have now updated the system so that we do a Query on our database and
send to all players (who have not specified they Don't want it by Email) who
have an email address. It's a lot quicker for us then and for you.

If you haven't got email then you won't be reading this! For those who
want to pass the info on though - we send a copy of Bree to all postal
players as the turns go out over a two week period.

In 2 wks time we hope to get the Webpage re-designed and updated on a more
regular basis.

After 4 turns of playing the Northmen in game 3, I think the position
is ok, but not overly thrilling. The agents are pretty weak and not
much of any use, I would say start them all at 40. They are basically
only good for buys and sells. This way they'd be good enough for
stealing gold and maybe a kill or two later in the game.

I like the SNAs for them, I have been able to upgrade both of my MT's
to castles and taking them at this point for the DS is going to be
hard.

I would also like the ability to recruit more than HC and HI. The
market goes to pot real fast and it would be nice to recruit some
lesser quality troops.

We don't want to confuse the players with the extra choice of troops and as
95% of the recruit orders in normal games are HI or HC we want to stick with
that. That's the thoughts there though. Agents is interesting - why can't
you 690 or sabotage stores with them?

I'm playing the Dwarves in game 3 (we're on turn 4 now) and am having
a great time (probably a lot better than the Goblins ;-).

I don't see any problems with the nation, the SNA's are good and
appropriate, as are the victory conditions (for all nation btw.).
Bilbo makes sure the nation isn't all natsells and armymoves - and he
will certainly become a nasty agent in the next turn or 3.

My greatest fear for this game, when it comes to newbies playing is
the danger of bankrupcy.
Unless they are very careful or gets proper instructions in the
beginning I think many games will be won by money problems caused by
the players themselves (excessive hiring, etc.), rather than armies
hammering each other. Something that may deter new players from moving
to the real game.

I don't think you should change the economies - but some kind of
warning about the economical situation seems in order, in addition to
the starting material they'll be getting.

It seems great for established players, lots of strategy and thinking
- and with a bit of a warning about the economy it'll be great for
newbies too.
