Hi,
Those people who have expressed a feeling that Harlequin shouldn't
charge 5% for CC payments, should reflect on the following ...
It is now becoming common practice for most major High Street retailers
to add 2.5% onto ALL purchases, whether made with a credit/debit card or
not. (Source: BBC R4 this afternoon) The argument used by the retailers
(supermarkets included) is that it is easier to spread the charges they
incur from banks on to all customers.
Colin.
Nothing new about it. It's always been that way - in England at least. I'm not sure I can remember a single occasion in the last 20 years of using a credit card where a shop has charged me extra for paying by credit card (perhaps JUST one). But I will ask the females who use my credit care onehelluvalot more than I do - I believe Marks and Spencers used to stand out as the only shop who would not accept credit cards.
It's a simple matter of absorbing uneven costs. Only a small minority of people choose to shop on a Monday morning, but you don't make them pay a surcharge on the basis that the shop is open just for them.

Here in the States, I would say CC charges are "uncommon", but not unheard
of. Kind of like posting a camp in hills and rough at skill level 32. Some
retailers do not view ccs as a customer convience as much as it is an
administrative headache.
However, what I REALLY suspect, is most companies presume a cc purchase and
price accordingly. Of course, most businesses do not have an active
newsgroup wondering where every copper piece is going... I think its amazing
Clint and Co even discuss this with the game group as opposed to just
announcing. This to me shows the heart of this company.
Happy Valentines Day... Or as the orcs in Mordor say, Yes, I'd like
something with a heart in it for dinner...

I'm not sure if this applies or not, but in the United States it is illegal
to add additional surcharges on to purchases because you use a credit or
debit card.

Obviously this doesn't apply to the UK! However, what is happening is
not surcharges being applied to people using a CC, but a 2.5% charge
being added to ALL purchases - even small cash purposes. I scarcely
ever use a credit card, so when I buy food in my local supermarket,
I'm now paying the bank charges that the supermarket gets charged for
those people that do use CCs. Unfair, surely?
Colin.
Hi everyone who replied to Colin's note.
You've misunderstood what he's saying. The High Street aren't adding a
charge that you see, its already in there in the retail price - so everyone
pays an extra 2.5%.
The point is that Harly AREN'T spreading the charge - they are charging only
the people who are incurring Harly an extra cost.
Sounds fair to me.
Tony
