Champions in games

Rather than champions randomly occurring, you might have an SNA, not sure how much it should cost, which promoted an additional starting character, say whoever has the highest total ranks that isn't already a champion, into champion status.

And during play, since losing a champion to challenge, assassination, encounter or other event would be traumatic, you could have a new champion arise amongst the court, someone stepping up to shoulder the burden in place of the fallen champion.

Yeah could be an encounter that triggers at that point, we've got some of the code to "kidnap" a character for X turns in place. Anyone fancy doing the textual bits for this?

Do players like this as a concept? Note one objection to 1650s

You could also set a time factor, such that every X turns (say on turn 10, 20, etc.) a character gets promoted to champion. I think that would be better than random occurance.

Yep.

Note that a single-classed character can still work fine as a champion, though multi-classed can take more advantage, and if you use total skill ranks as the determining factor, then it is more likely that multi-classed characters would be promoted, but you might also see high ranking single-classed characters become champions. And any character can take advantage of three orders, even if only one is a skill order. Just some examples:

Yeah I get it - could work.

At the capital, a champion can work on her primary skill while being a master of logistics, using two orders to sell and transport goods.

A Cxx in command of an army can recruit, train, attack or threaten, plus move or force march the army, and either refuse challenges or do a recon; one travelling with an
army can train or recruit, refuse and recon.

An Axx can be a superspy, doing an agent order, a move character, and either refuse challenges or do a misc scouting order like hex or pop center.

An Exx can refuse, influence and move.

A Wxx can prentice as well as cast spells, and/or refusing, moving...

I think too hard to code for the value it would get but I get the concept. Maybe we could even consider a new Class? Not sure what that would be but it would be interesting.

So while a multi-classsed character can gain more skill rank quickly, I don't think you need to limit champions to being multi-classed only. And by having the non-champion character with the highest total skill ranks be selected, you may usually select a multi-ranked guy, but you might get a C85 promoted instead of say a C20/A40, the C85 having been around leading the kingdom for a while, whereas the C20/A40 is still making a name for herself.

I take your point and agree, changed my opinion - the value of debate..

On another topic, not liking the idea of skill rank limits. Skill increases pretty slowly at the upper levels anyway.

Noted.

Um One thought, Champions could have a chance of
occurring when you hit a c ertain rank
level? Might be an interesting SNA as well,
including the ability to increase that chance,
and/or lower the level needed to get it.

I suspect they'd have to multi-classed as well.

Just some thoughts.

At the moment any character can reach 100 skill

make high ranking starting characters more important.

Hi everyone

Pondering updating the 2950 and 1650 module with Champions as well (3
orders for specific characters like in 1450 Kin-strife).

Any opinions/thoughts on this?

I’ll be looking to update encounters as well at some point so if you
have some game design ideas for this I’d love to hear them.

Hi Rob,

Having the champion’ status transferred to the char with the highest skill sum, SNA to promote a regular char to champion at the beginning of the game or at regular intervals, being promoted to champion as result of an encounter, having a special capital order to promote one to champion, are all regular features from most Clash of Legends scenarios.

The system also has SNAs such as the one that gives combat bonuses to armies commanded by champions, another with morale bonus while in owned cities, and so forth.

I can make you a more comprehensive list if you want some ideas to improve ME games.

Rather than champions randomly occurring, you

might have an SNA, not sure how much it should

cost, which promoted an additional starting

character, say whoever has the highest total

ranks that isn’t already a champion, into champion status.

And during play, since losing a champion to

challenge, assassination, encounter or other

event would be traumatic, you could have a new

champion arise amongst the court, someone

stepping up to shoulder the burden in place of the fallen champion.

You could also set a time factor, such that

every X turns (say on turn 10, 20, etc.) a

character gets promoted to champion. I think

that would be better than random occurance.

Note that a single-classed character can still

work fine as a champion, though multi-classed

can take more advantage, and if you use total

skill ranks as the determining factor, then it

is more likely that multi-classed characters

would be promoted, but you migh t also see high
ranking single-classed characters become

champions. And any character can take advantage

of three orders, even if only one is a skill order. Just some examples:

At the capital, a champion can work on her

primary skill while being a master of logistics,

using two orders to sell and transport goods.

A Cxx in command of an army can recruit, train,

attack or threaten, plus move or force march the

army, and either refuse challenges or do a

recon; one travelling with an army can train or recruit, refuse and recon.

An Axx can be a superspy, doing an agent order,

a move character, and either refuse challenges

or do a misc scouting order like hex or pop center.

An Exx can refuse, influence and move.

A Wxx can prentice as well as cast spells, and/or refusing, moving…

So while a multi-classsed character can gain

more skill rank quickly, I don’t think you need

to limit champions to being multi-classed only.

And by having the non-champion character with

the highest total skill ranks be selected, you

may usually select a multi-ranked guy, but you

might get a C85 promoted instead of say a

C20/A40, the C85 having been around leading the

kingdom for a while, whereas the C20/A40 is still making a name for herself.

On another topic, not liking the idea of skill

rank limits. Skill increases pretty slowly at the upper levels anyway.

Um One thought, Champions could have a chance of

occurring when you hit a certain rank

level? Might be an interesting SNA as well,

including the ability to increase that chance,

and/or lower the level needed to get it.

I suspect they’d have to multi-classed as well.

Just some thoughts.

I wouldn’t mind having 3 orders in 1650. It is

one thing I’d like to see (in all versions)is a

restriction on how good characters can be come.

At the moment any character can reach 100 skill

rank. I’d like to see this restricted to say a

random number between 50 and 100. This would

make high ranking starting characters more important.

Sounds fun, btw the game you mentioned doesn't have a licence to run the game so if you're playing (or have played) it be aware that you are not playing a legal game.

Not sure if that’s true, Rob. I am convinced lawyers would disagree.

300 of Sparta is generic mythology, cannot be licensed.

They do have a temporary license for the Game of Thrones scenarios as long as they keep the game free.

Even Tolkien books are probably public domain by now, but I could be wrong here. You would know better.

All art used was created by the players or used with permission of the creators.

If you imply that the game is using any algorithms from MEGames, I don’t believe that’s correct as they never had access to those algorithms and I don’t believe they tried to reverse engineer them if that’s what you mean by not licensed.

You can say that the game holds many similarities with MEGames, and I’m sure they could point you to another 10 systems (active or not) that it’s also borrowing similarities. I remember myself playing a similar PBM game from Japan that predated GSI and had a very similar system with numbered sequential orders and mechanics very similar to 1650. That’s in fact what lead me to play MEgames decades ago.

They even have a GMs from half dozen systems playing that game. I heard that those systems and GMs also shaped many of the features of the game.

I know you and Ed from Harlequin played the game in the past, so on a second thought, maybe you are correct.

Rather than champions randomly occurring, you

might have an SNA, not sure how much it should

character, say whoever has the highest total

ranks that isn’t already a champion, into champion status.

And during play, since losing a champion to

challenge, assassination, encounter or other

event would be traumatic, you could have a new

champion arise amongst the court, someone

stepping up to shoulder the burden in place of the fallen champion.

You could also set a time factor, such that

every X turns (say on turn 10, 20, etc.) a

character gets promoted to champion. I think

that would be better than random occurance.

Note that a single-classed character can still

work fine as a champion, though multi-classed

can take more advantage, and if you use total

skill ranks as the determining factor, then it

is more likely that multi-classed characters

would be promoted, but you migh t also see high

ranking single-classed characters become

champions. And any character can take advantage

of three orders, even if only one is a skill order. Just some examples:

At the capital, a champion can work on her

primary skill while being a master of logistics,

using two orders to sell and transport goods.

A Cxx in command of an army can recruit, train,

attack or threaten, plus move or force march the

army, and either refuse challenges or do a

recon; one travelling with an army can train or recruit, refuse and recon.

An Axx can be a superspy, doing an agent order,

a move character, and either refuse challenges

or do a misc scouting order like hex or pop center.

An Exx can refuse, influence and move.

A Wxx can prentice as well as cast spells, and/or refusing, moving…

So while a multi-classsed character can gain

more skill rank quickly, I don’t think you need

to limit champions to being multi-classed only.

And by having the non-champion character with

the highest total skill ranks be selected, you

may usually select a multi-ranked guy, but you

might get a C85 promoted instead of say a

C20/A40, the C85 having been around leading the

kingdom for a while, whereas the C20/A40 is still making a name for herself.

On another topic, not liking the idea of skill

rank limits. Skill increases pretty slowly at the upper levels anyway.

Um One thought, Champions could have a chance of

occurring when you hit a certain rank

level? Might be an interesting SNA as well,

including the ability to increase that chance,

and/or lower the level needed to get it.

I suspect they’d have to multi-classed as well.

Just some thoughts.

Hi

I wouldn’t mind having 3 orders in 1650. It is

one thing I’d like to see (in all versions)is a

restriction on how good characters can be come.

At the moment any character can reach 100 skill

rank. I’d like to see this restricted to say a

random number between 50 and 100. This would

make high ranking starting characters more important.

Sounds fun, btw the game you mentioned doesn’t

have a licence to run the game so if you’re

playing (or have played) it be aware that you are not playing a legal game.

The system also has SNAs such as the one that

I can make you a more comprehensive list if you

want some ideas to improve ME games.

Subject: [mepbmlist] Champions in games

Not sure if that's true, Rob. I am convinced lawyers would disagree.

Interesting what you said at the end of the email though. So like I said I would discourage you playing, what is imo a non-licenced product.

300 of Sparta is generic mythology, cannot be licensed.

They do have a temporary license for the Game of Thrones scenarios as long as they keep the game free.

Um - you sure they have such a licence? We have liaised with George RR Martin via our attorney at times in the past.

Even Tolkien books are probably public domain by now, but I could be wrong here. You would know better.

They're not.. .we have a very good relationship with Saul Zaentz and regularly update both that licence and licence it out.

All art used was created by the players or used with permission of the creators.

If you imply that the game is using any algorithms from MEGames, I don't believe that's correct as they never had access to those algorithms and I don't believe they tried to reverse engineer them if that's what you mean by not licensed.

Based on what information do you have here?

You can say that the game holds many similarities with MEGames, and I'm sure they could point you to another 10 systems (active or not) that it's also borrowing similarities.

For which a licence was granted.

I remember myself playing a similar PBM game from Japan that predated GSI and had a very similar system with numbered sequential orders and mechanics very similar to 1650. That's in fact what lead me to play MEgames decades ago.

Interesting if you can point to that that would be useful to see.

They even have a GMs from half dozen systems playing that game. I heard that those systems and GMs also shaped many of the features of the game.

I know you and Ed from Harlequin played the game in the past, so on a second thought, maybe you are correct.

I suspect we are.

Sounds fun, btw the game you mentioned doesn't
have a licence to run the game so if you're
playing (or have played) it be aware that you are not playing a legal game.

Hi Brad,

RCT’ing the champion-creating NPC in KS is always a priority for me.

Children of non-champion characters get two orders so presumably children with two champion parents should get three; the proper (rhetorical) question is, how many orders for children whose parents are one champ/one nonchamp? Which gene is recessive?

This is an interesting idea. Make it cost something - give me a leg and I’ll give you an extra order- X% of skill lost but poof, you are a champion.

Encounters that “convert” people.

Artifacts that allow the issuing of an extra order.

A new Hard Healing Spell - Make Champion, parameter 5-char ID, that char can issue 3 orders that turn.

An inverse Healing Spell - Hobble Champion - parameter 5-char ID, that char will lose 1 of their orders, randomly chosen, or 2 of their orders, randomly chosen if X…

If 2 Champions have children, will the kids get 4 orders each or 6?

Hi Ernie,

I could see a character being promoted to champ status in FA should both royalty characters decease. For 1650/2950, I’m still strongly opposed.

Rather than champions randomly occurring, you might have an SNA, not sure how much it should cost, which promoted an additional starting character, say whoever has the highest total ranks that isn’t already a champion, into champion status.

And during play, since losing a champion to challenge, assassination, encounter or other event would be traumatic, you could have a new champion arise amongst the court, someone stepping up to shoulder the burden in place of the fallen champion.

You could also set a time factor, such that every X turns (say on turn 10, 20, etc.) a character gets promoted to champion. I think that would be better than random occurance.

At the capital, a champion can work on her primary skill while being a master of logistics, using two orders to sell and transport goods.

A Cxx in command of an army can recruit, train, attack or threaten, plus move or force march the army, and either refuse challenges or do a recon; one travelling with an army can train or recruit, refuse and recon.

An Axx can be a superspy, doing an agent order, a move character, and either refuse challenges or do a misc scouting order like hex or pop center.

An Exx can refuse, influence and move.

A Wxx can prentice as well as cast spells, and/or refusing, moving…

So while a multi-classsed character can gain more skill rank quickly, I don’t think you need to limit champions to being multi-classed only. And by having the non-champion character with the highest total skill ranks be selected, you may usually select a multi-ranked guy, but you might get a C85 promoted instead of say a C20/A40, the C85 having been around leading the kingdom for a while, whereas the C20/A40 is still making a name for herself.

On another topic, not liking the idea of skill rank limits. Skill increases pretty slowly at the upper levels anyway.

Pondering updating the 2950 and 1650 module with Champions as well (3

Any opinions/thoughts on this?

I’ll be looking to update encounters as well at some point so if you

refuse challenges or do a recon; one travelling with an
army can train or recruit, refuse and recon.

An Axx can be a superspy, doing an agent order, a move

character, and either refuse challenges or do a misc
scouting order like hex or pop center.

An Exx can refuse, influence and move.

A Wxx can prentice as well as cast spells, and/or

refusing, moving…

So while a multi-classsed character can gain more skill

rank quickly, I don’t think you need to limit champions to
being multi-classed only. And by having the non-champion
character with the highest total skill ranks be selected,
you may usually select a multi-ranked guy, but you might
get a C85 promoted instead of say a C20/A40, the C85
having been around leading the kingdom for a while,
whereas the C20/A40 is still making a name for herself.

On another topic, not liking the idea of skill rank

limits. Skill increases pretty slowly at the upper levels
anyway.

At the moment any character can reach 100 skill

random number between 50 and 100. This w ould
make high ranking starting characters more

Hi everyone

Pondering updating the 2950 and 1650
module with Champions as well (3

orders for specific characters like in
1450 Kin-strife).

Any opinions/thoughts on this?

I’ll be looking to update encounters
as well at some point so if you

ha ve some game design ideas for this
I’d love to hear them.

I think this might be too powerful - suddenly Harad gains a few Commanders from nowhere and the IK's mages suddenly as back-up leading armies that weren't expected.

However as a concept it's cool - just needs working on I think.

You could also set a time factor, such that every X turns (say on turn 10, 20, etc.) a character gets promoted to champion. I think that would be better than random occurance.

At the capital, a champion can work on her primary skill while being a master of logistics, using two orders to sell and transport goods.

A Cxx in command of an army can recruit, train, attack or threaten, plus move or force march the army, and either refuse challenges or do a recon; one travelling with an army can train or recruit, refuse and recon.

An Axx can be a superspy, doing an agent order, a move character, and either refuse challenges or do a misc scouting order like hex or pop center.

An Exx can refuse, influence and move.

A Wxx can prentice as well as cast spells, and/or refusing, moving...

Presently taking a break from doing FAS 41 set-ups and had a thought - what about new Races in 1000? (Maybe a KS thing as well for future).

Hobbits
Ents
Beornings
Trolls (evil)
Presently Non-human but what about Orcs?

Any other thoughts? And what would be their SNAs and special Racial bonuses/Restrictions?

Maybe some new SNAs to go with them would be interesting as well.
