What about this? Din Ohtar's id is din_o. Could I name a character and
put a space at the front i.e _din_? If you could, this character would
never get assassinated, kidnapped etc!! Is it allowed?I dont think that it is allowed to start a name with a blanc space and as
you say that unpleasant fellow (seen froma FP's wiev) has the id "DIN_O" so
if "_DIN_"pops up on your message so what? he is probably not nearly as
unplesant a fellow as "DIN_O"
Generally if we feel that players are not playing in the spirit of the game
(whatever that is - it varies from game to game, country to country, region
to region you name it we have come across too many variations to count
now)then we might ask the player not to do so. If we feel that the player
is using the naming system unfairly then we will not allow it. (So a
leading space would not be allowed). So for example in a game recently I
put frUmgara, frAmgara and frEmgara - I explained to the player concerned
why that was.
For me (apologies to Chris for any differences as they are ball park figures
at best):
1) 75% ease of use - having all of the same type of characters together on
the turnheet so that I can do my turn with, for example, all Ems in one
place, all Com/Agents in another etc.
2) 20% Laziness - basically too arsed to change it and the character who
named the new character was probably in the back of my mind. (I leave my
turn to write up for the day of the deadline although it is done usually 90%
of the time on the day of receiving the turn - short of diploming).
3) 5% in game advantage - hoping for a mistake or mis-reading or
misinformation for the opposing side. In future I won't be doing it though
as although this is allowed I would prefer to play otherwise. I don't mind
misinformation so much as this can be a valid tactic but not in this way.
But each to their own...
If you leave a characters' name blank when creating a new one, the names
come from a stock character list don't they? There is a list of names of
elvish origin for new characters in the Sinda and Noldo ranks for
example.
Harlequin take these names from a list, they don't use their creative
genius.
Um - the number of camp names we don't get names for and have to make up
when the game runs out of spare names especialyl in game 35 where every
other camp name holds up the computer whilst we think of something are
uncounable now. We let the computer choose character names - it having a
decent enough list of names to come from I reckon. Having put in some names
before for players (and having a few complaints) it is easier to leave
things to the random factor.
Sometimes when you do a scout for characters, you get a rogue name crop
up
from this list. The character isn't really there, his name has come from
this list to indicate your scout hasn't been accurate. Three times in
one
game, I came up with a long rider character from my scout. And every
time,
my challenge/assassination failed because the character wasn't present.
I
decided I would ignore this name if it cropped up again.
I *think* You can tell if its a real character because you find Warlock
Saerol, Warlord Hagrog, Spy Kadida etc. It's a stock character if it
just
gives a name. Am I right? I'd appreciate it if anyone here knows for
certain???Hmm never considered this option, allright guys find the old turns, dust
them off and lets find out (because i got this feeling that Clint wont tell)
Don't know as we are having this exact "problem" in game 46 - false names,
or names of characters who are not there but exist. Our Scouts don't
actually show up the real characters there at all with a 125 scouting chance
as well! Arggghhh. But thems the rules so we're happy to play by them.
