I was toying around with a chat module for the forums. It seems to work well enough, but i must admit I’ve never really used it for anything serious. It’s available by clicking the “Chat” link at the top of any page on this site.
If that doesn’t suit you, there are any number of web-based IRC relays that allow you to chat with a web interface but actually connect to an IRC server. If that is something that you’re interested in, I’ve run IRC servers in the past and I couldset one up on this server. I could call it something like “irc.mepbm.com” and it could be accessible both via web-based chat or any standard IRC client. It wouldn’t be integrated into the forum (yet), but it would certainly be more flexible than what the “Chat” link offers (and not as laggy to boot).
Bleh so I was bored, and I actually went ahead and also set up an IRC server at “irc.mepbm.com” that can be access either through any standard IRC client or through a nifty little CGI script at http://www.mepbm.com/cgi-bin/irc.cgi, which is actually pretty cool. So now that’s two different ways to chant, although I must say that the CGI-based version is probably better (it certainly isn’t laggy), but it doesn’t integrate into the forums at all, which is probably fine.
