There's been talk in the past of allowing participation by
AIM/email/internet phone/etc. Any hope of such this year?

Don't think so. I can.... hold on... Yeh why not - if there is a player
base.
Start Thu 27th Dec ends Sat 29th Dec. Hourly turnaround start 11am UK time
and end 8pm and from then on for the next 2 days. Probably have
turnaround somewhat slower than that as we need to input 1 hour, process,
print and send half an hour. Half an hour to receive emails. So a 2 hour
turnaround 5 turns a day? Not sure if that is possible to get enough done
then though. Ie it might not be feasible. BoFA would be the best way of
doing this as it would be a lot faster.
This would be in ADDITION to the game running here - probably best if it is
Thu 27th start as well - then we can get GMs in as normal and run a
normalish day.
