Combat Calculator playing up

I've been using Holger Eichmann's combat calculator for years now, but it's just stopped working (in Windows 98). The main window launches, but the secondary "armies" windows won't open when the buttons are clicked. It will still work perfectly though in Windows safe mode. I've tried removing and reinstalling it

All I've done recently is upgrade to IE6, and the usual Microsoft critical updates packages. Any on you have enough Windows know-how to suggest what I might try? (No funny guys PLEASE)
