I jknow agent orders have become more difficult but still the debate
runs on : should an Agent be able to assassinate an Army Commander
thus disbanding the army.
I think a ban on Agents performing such missions should be put into
place at least so far as to make it impossible when large armies are
concerned. Perhaps the success of such assassinations should be like
the army comms own Threaten(498) order based up on rank of the char.
performing it and the number of troops involved. e.g.
success(%age)=Agent rank - (guardsx2) - Troop Mod.
the troops modifier would be like the fortifications modifier for
threatening.
100-499 troops 20%
500-999 troops 40%
1000+ troops not possible
Therefore even the highest ranked Agent possible can't kill off a
commander of 1000 troops or more.
The comprimise would be the Sabotage stores order currently for
pop.centres only. Expanding this to allow the Agent to Sabotage the
baggage of the army instead of the usual assassination attempt would
be more realistic, I feel. This would result in some of the troops
being killed off through nefarious stuff like poisoning, botchelism
etc. The order wouldn't need a commodity as required info. but the
Army Commanders id instead.
I think this is more likely to happen. The reality is that I think
we'll all be doomed to watch a lone assassin waltz past 2-3000 armed
and trained warriors, past the sentries and private guards of the
general. Light a cigarette for his personal bodyguard before
sauntering into the Generals tent. Slitting his throat and emerging
from said tent and shouting 'YOU CAN ALL GO HOME NOW, I'VE KILLED
HIM.'
What would you prefer.

RD: I agree with you that the assassination of a general should not lead to the army automatically disbanding. I do -not- agree that it should be impossible to assassinate a general (kidnap maybe, but not assass). I don't know why people automatically think an assassin always uses a knife; there are many weapons open to the imaginative assassin including crossbows and poisons, which you've already mentioned.
The weapon itself was less important than the method used. There was the ninja who concealed himself in the chamber under his target's toilet (no s-bends in those days) and impaled him on a spear. Talk about a sticky end! There was the beautiful Hebrew woman who gained the favour of the Assyrian general, got him drunk, and then nailed his head to the ground with a tent peg. On the subject of poisons, during the Napoleonic wars, there was a Spanish priest who introduced cyanide into the flour used for baking bread, and thus managed to poison the entire French garrison!
To stop the army disbanding on the death of its commander, ideally the program should replace the dead man with a new commander, usually C30 but up to C40 depending on nation SNA. The nation would of course have to pay the usual 5k for this character, who would be named before any others.
