commanders in naval battles

I know that the losers of naval battles all drown miserably. However if the naval batle occurs in a shore hex, do they die or are they “cast ashore”?

My experience has been that naval battles in sea hexes will result in all characters in the destroyed navies being drowned. However in shore hexes, my characters have always seemed to manage to swim ashore. :slight_smile:
