This point has been raised. With either Laurence's 1st 2nd, 3rd valuation or the more complex version with points to allocate and more options, there is the option of favouritism. I think it's my greatest dislike of this voting issue. However, given that, I think the Gunboat game shows that players can be trusted in most cases and will attempt to vote out of a sense of relative skill rather than friendship. (Mostly I think that will be biased but perception of player's skill - ie interaction between players which is more likely with friends than non-friends or Neutrals joining a team so there will be a shift in the voting that way.)
Interesting or what? I find this fascinating stuff....

What I dont like with the free 100 point splitting is that I fear MANY
···
persons will not vote with their heart but their loyalty to good ME
friends , perhaps even deals (if you give me your 100 points I will give
you my 100 points as well....). This could give a very wrong picture
reflecting more who has the most loyal ME friends, than reflecting actual
skill.

For what it is worth, I think that perhaps favouritism would be reduced -
if not negated - by having it as a secret ballot. That way no-one should
feel under presure to vote for a friend rather than a player they admire.
There is, of course, no perfect solution, and in any voting system there
will be disgruntled parties and subjective voting. We all of us have an
agenda when voting, and it is not for anyone to judge the value of our
opinion. We each of us have our own criteria for judging a player's
merit, whether conscious or subconscious, regardless of the stipulations
decided upon by the game organisers, and it would foolish of us to think
that we could eradicate favouritism altogether.
Rambling done.

Good point - it is secret- sorry if that isn't specified. As with any such voting system if you want to inform others what you voted that's your call but we wouldn't publish who voted.
