Digest Number 1682

While I love history, the Europeans remember to much of it. Handing down ancient resentments for a thousand years. Worse, they bring this 'historic memory' to North America when they emmigrate. Watching two central Europeans discuss a small and insignificant provience is a kin to watching a street fight. Thank God, their children show more sense than the parents.

My favorite on this is that it's all where you are standing...
What I mean is this: I had an opportunity to visit a Welsh castle and
one of the plaques describing events read "...and then the English
amassed a horde..." I just had to grin. There was a purpose in using
'Horde' instead of 'Army'. The signs in the castle were filled with this
sort of 'tweaks' to the history. Just a matter of perspective, I
suppose...

Pretty much my view. I have no trouble (most of the time) being both English and British but some people get rather uptight about their identity. [I know a couple of brothers, friends of friends, in London. Born in England of Irish ancestory. One is determined he is Irish and the other equally determined his English! Think they are both right in that loyalty and indentity are largely what you make of it].

Realise in hindsight I was wrong about one think in my last note. The Aussies have been entertaining the Scots the past couple of weeks so they haven't had a long rest. Hope I remember to listen to the radio tomorrow to see how we get on - and that it's better than we did against the All Blacks.

Since England was handed its 3rd worst shellacking in
history by the convicts AND Wales was also blasted by
South Africa would it be fair for this Yank to observe
once again that the Brits have been pasted in rugby?

Anyone remember the '98 "Tour of Hell"?....
