I expect I'll have more questions as I proceed. He who asks a
question is a fool for a moment, but he who never asks a question is
a fool for ever.
Tip: I keep all my games in separate folders, with a copy of automagic in
each. I find it works well

1) How do I save it? I have automagic2006a1.xls as a file, as
downloaded, and I've imported my turn data. Do I save it under a new
file name? I'm a bit confused here you see, as spreadsheet with
macros feels different to running an application and saving a file
Meow or Word style.
A: IF you just close the spreadsheet, it will prompt you to save the file.
It will retain the same file name
2) How do I handle other games and other positions in the same
game? Do I open automagic2006a1.xls at the start of each one and
save under new file names?
A: Create multiple copies of automagic, 1 for each game.
lol, thanks Mike, I should have guessed I'll get different
answers. John's saying he uses "save as", you're saying close to
keep the same file name. With your system, how do you cope with 2
positions in the same game? Wouldn't you end up trying to save 2
files both called automagic2006a1.xls into the same game folder? Or
do you have sub-folders for each position or somesuch?

I do the same as Mike. The 1st time I save the file in my gamefolder I rename it with the nation name. For example if I am playing 2 positions in game 12 with Noldo and Sinda I will have 2 automagic files in my folder 1 called Noldo12automagic.xls and the other Sind12automagic.xls.
Hope this helps.

For safety only ever have one AM file open at a time. If you have two positions in a game create another copy of the AM file in the game directory (where you save your turn files etc). I usually rename the AM file as well - eg AHar-22-6a.xls (for Harad, nation 22 (for when I play 1000 games - makes it easier) and -6a means that it's AM version 6a so that I know when Mike updates it to update the AM file).
Either save as of save when it closes is fine. I use Save as when I'm doing my turn.
