Hi at all
In my opinion, a more complex market and caravan system would be the first
step to scare newbies.....
I do not like to plan my transports for three turns if I am playing the WK
for example......
I think there are some things that could be changed (easily) and would
improve fun to higher levels....
1: Take the static componet out of the game.....
In every game, everybody knows where and how big the armys are which
Charakters can be the army commanders and which troops are the armys made
of.....
Everybody knows where the Enemy Pop Centres are, what fortifications they
have and even where the hidden ones are.... (No fun to play Sinda when you
know that a reveal pop could ruin your day from turn one...)
Everybody knows the riddles, the encounters, the dragons etc......
I think it is not possible to change everything, so that it is different in
every game, but with some minor changes yu can change a lot without the risk
of altering the game balance)
I think of
- New riddles
- New (or Random) encounters
- Change the position of some pop centres, while keeping the same tax base
for all....
- Change the troop types and the commanders of the armys while keeping
the same base strenght.
- New and or Changed Charakters (surely Elrond should be Elrond, but some
guys could be changed)
-New Artifacts or scrambled artifact numbers (was scrambled the right word?)
For me its a lot of fun to be surprised by a cool encounter or something
else...
1650 has been played very often, so everybody knows everthing.
To change these little things would be better, then changing the whole market
system, or make the game more complex.
2) The naval system stinks.......
New Harbours and ships are to expensive
Why cant a navy on sea only attack an enemy navy on sea in a Land field
without fighting enemy land forces?
Why cant a navy Stand and Defend another navy?
Probably a way to upgrade shuips with cannons (by spending steel) to give
them a strenght against fortifications.....
3) Minor changes to the combat system
I want to have a sense in recruiting light forces.....
(like Archers with first strike (must not be their whole strenght probably
1/3 before and 2/3 damage in battle)
or like light cav without leather..... (hate those leather transport orders)
and this would make the light cav a real cool alternative to the HI.....
Probalbly Men in Arms should only cost food and no money......
Need some change for the LI.....
--> A thing that I always hated was the fact that an army disbands when there
is no commander left.....
I think the owner of the army should have a little bit of time to get his
guys back....
---> For example 50% of the ARmy leave the field when there is no commander
left, but the rest can be kept by a backup that moves into the army the same
turn?
Dont know how far this would be possible and how far the game balance would
be changed.... but its just an idea...
4) Changes that make the game more spicy
new, recuitable NPCs
new encounters
etc.
So far my opinion...
Greetings
Stefan
Internal consistency. It's a game set in Tolkien's Middle Earth. No
cannons, no gunpowder ASFAIK. If you're going to suggest cannons, you
might as well have Tomahawk missiles on your ships - talk to the boys
who like 4th Age, they'd probably go for it
BUT I take your general point - the fact that naval combat is weak. As
well as the things you say about cost etc. I don't like the fact that
you can take harbours down, and so drastically limit the places where
navies can land. I don't like the fact that one allegiance almost
always wins total naval supremacy within the first 6 turns. And the
battles could be much more interesting with tactics and navy specific
spells.

Youre right cannons was truely the false word.....
I am fan of Tolkiens world myself, so earse cannons and put in something like
warmachine etc.
In every case there is something to do to make naval combat etc more
interesting...or ships mure useful....
played southern Gondor two times and the Corsairs and the only task to
fullfill with this giant bunch of ships was transporting trops.... preety
boring...

Artefacts - what about a list of say 400 artefacts that could be in the
game - of which the database only allows 200 to be found (ie are brought
into the game database at the start of each game?)
Could be done with spells and characters as well - so for your slot of 8
characters (some nations could have more at set-up and some less) you would
draw from 3 guaranteed Elrond being one of them for the Noldo, and 5
variables?
PCs - similar, spells, encounters?
Opinions - I think this would add some pizzaz to the game yet still keep it
similar enough to before to keep everyone who loves the "I know where x is"
type game.

WOW! Now THIS sounds groovy!
I'd have x number of characters guaranteed, just which ones is the
question...
Very cool idea.

For each nation you would have the mainstays guaranteed and then others from
a pool of characters. There woulc possibly be a three tier system:
1) Main characters - all guaranteed
2) Secondary - characters that have good stats- variable choice (randomly
picked by the computer)
3) Tertiary - poorer characters- variable choice (randomly picked by the
computer)
Some nations would have more of type 1) than others. Any more thoughts?
