Its not boredom that I worry about. It the fact that
its action from T1 in 1650 games. If you know nothing
about the game, its possible that you will have lost
your position before your mentor tells them how useful
it is to recruit, or name certain characters classes.

my cousin had the dog lord in G96 or 97 when GSI ran it
on his setup turn, dendra had an encounter with a dragon
he guessed wrong
Dendra died

this has changed (dragons don't show up on T0 anymore)
but the dangers of being a newbie are going to be there regardless

the question is how to minimize them

the answer AFAIK is to limit the number of newbies in a game (hoping mistake
will balanve mistake) as well as where the play a newbie cardolan or blind
sorceror will not die on turn 3 like a newbie ice king could)

GSI used to try and assign them neuts - really neuts in a grudge game
being a recruited neut in a a grudger is probably the best way to learn the
game

My first game of MEPBM was played with an old friend -
I somehow persuaded him to indulge in this activity.
He left it to me to suggest the teams to Harlequin. A
quick check of the manual revealed that the 'Northmen'
were a power ready to awaken (like the US in WWII!)
and that the Woodmen produced great scouts and agents.
I asked Harlequin to give us the Northmen and the
Woodmen. Great.

I then received my first copy of Bree which,
ironically, contained the following advice for
newbies: never under any circumstances should
beginners play the NM or the Woodies.

I always bore players with this story - I have never
recovered from the shock.

My advice is forget about scenarios and setups and
SNAs this and SNAs that - just update the bloody
manual! In good humour...

I try and keep an eye on newbies. It's hard sometimes when a newbie comes
in and definitely wants to play xx. The problem specifically with the
NM and WO is that they are famous nations (from the books) and so player
want to pick them up, yet from a Power perspective they are low in power, so
are not popular with the more experienced players. Catch 22 though is that
they need an experienced player to play them correctly.
