Got a small query - do players like the hidden aspect of the game stats or
not? Eg the exact bonus for the combat tactics, effects of fortifications
etc?

It's a Bank Holiday, so I am going to waffle and annoy
everyone. There are two types of players - the gamer
and the nerd.

The gamer immershes him or herself into the world of
the game - it is an emotional experience because this
player invests imagination into the play.

The nerd is a control freak - he (usually) or she is
only interested in mastering the mechanics of the
game, not in participating in the unfolding story.

To use an analogy - I used to play a game called
quasar and enjoyed 'storming' the base or 'dying a
glorious death'. Of course none of this really
happened - we were just running around wearing plastic
kits. However, I was a player.

The nerds in the game realised that if you swivelled
and twisted in a certain direction, the opponent could
not shoot you. They looked very silly and spoiled the
play for everyone.

If you want to know the detailed mechanics of the game
then please get a programming job at Harlequin or GSI
and let us play the game.

Actually, I think I was externalising a conflict
within all of us - we are nerds AND gamers. Sorry

Hmm. . sounds like when I explain why I'm taking a vacation day to go to
the regional Historic Miniatures Gaming Society (HMGS-East) gaming
convention. As one of my co-workers so aptly puts it, "he's going away
to play with little toy soldiers!" This is also why I simply say "I get
together with friends on Friday nights" in lieu of "I'm going over to a
fellow geek's house to play toy soldiers with some geek friends of
mine!"
