RD: Tolkien was born in S Africa, true, but at the time (1892), S Africa was
not a nation state, it was part of the British Empire. After serving in WW1
Tolkien spent the rest of his life in England, and it was in England that he
wrote The Hobbit, LoR etc. If he held a passport it would have been a
British one. Therefore he was at least British if not English.
The comedian Spike Milligan was born in India of Anglo-Irish parents, but
he's still a British national, not an Indian.
