Downtime

I apologize for the forum downtime. I performed some big upgrades on the server and a few hours afterwards the server spontaneously rebooted and killed one of the hard drives and then some configuration files were bad.

Everything is back to normal now, although now I’m starting to think I need to plan for a replacement server in the next few months or so. After all, this server is almost 12 years old. (Oldie but goodie.)

Okay, so my problems were a little more difficult than I’d previously assumed. One of my server’s processors finally died for good, and I’m hoping that:

A) The slow death of one of the processors in the server was the cause of the previous days’ issues.

and

B) The rest of the hardware will behave until I can scrunge up/procure/steal a replacement.

Again, I apologize for all of the downtime, and hopefully this old beast will continue to work until I can schedule its replacement in the very near future.

Hi Darrell,

can you fix the problem with the automatic log outs? Every time I’ve logged in, then start writing a post, by the time I post it I’ve been automatically logged out. In fact, the forum seems to log me out at the drop of a hat.

I assume there’s an administrator setting that sets the cookie time out or some such. It probably just needs to be cranked up to an hour or even half a day. Notice how logging into a yahoo group works – one never seems to get auto-logged out repeatedly.

thanks, and best regards,

Adam

Cookies from these forums don’t expire, ever. The problem you describe is occuring because the cookie is not being written to your machine. The initial login succeeds, and you appear to be logged in, but the first time you do anything where the forums check your authentication cookie, it won’t find the cookie and you’ll get the message saying that you’re not logged in. This is the only error that anyone has ever complained about with these forums, and the only solution is to modify the client’s web browser to allow cookies from this site. This has nothing to do with the forums or this server, unfortunately, except possibly to say that the software developers who have created the forum software perhaps could make it clearer that the cookies are failing to be written. The cookies are being written from “forums.mepbm.com”, so that should be allowed in the browser.

From a work machine, where I do not have access to security options in my IE, I can post on the forum if I type quickly… But if I answer the phone, then review what I’ve written, then decided to “Submit Reply”, I’m unable to as I’ve been logged out. The steps/keystrokes are the same, except there’s a small amount of time difference. Doesn’t make sense to me, if my browser settings didn’t allow cookies, how did I log in at all? (I’m an “all or nothing” type simpleton…)

I’ve had the same problem. Seems the system times out over a time period. Short messages are no problem, but a lengthy one requires a re-login, re-direction to the correct forum link, and then a cut and paste of the orginal message. Now, lets see if this one makes it in a timely fashion?

The above message posted correctly. The one I sent linking to G81 required me to log back in, go back to the string I wanted to post in and then cut and paste the message in the quick reply box.
