Imagine an army with a dragon (or two) fighting against an undefended city. If the army has more attack strength (including the dragons) than the value of the city, but too little health to survive itself, what happens?
Can they capture it?
Can they destroy it?
And do other things (balrogs, ents, woses etc) work in the same way?
Im sure someone will correct me if Im wrong but dont Dragons only have combat value against armies. I thought they didnt get involved in PC combat, fortifications or not?
Think of a dragon as a 15k-25k combat weapon with NO defensive constitution.
The dragon gets to be effective only during the first round of combat be that against an enemy army or a city that is undefended.
Drummer,
That is a common misconception, because they don’t show up in the verbage of the attack. Trust me, they are used in the attack. (As are balrogs and such.) I have used a balrog a couple of times to help capture MT as the fire king.
I still think the army has to have enough constitution to survive one round of combat with the pop center though, if you want to burn or capture it. (Not 100% sure on this one though.)
that’s my understanding too from what I have seen in games, 10 wryms + 100MA will not take down much…
But i do have an exception though I think this may have been a quirk from long ago. You see, playing once with SFGA the defunct aussie ME provider, we did have a turn once where 2730 was attacked in an almighty close battle - enough to take the place but not enough to survive. And incredibly, the battle report stated the pop had fallen, had dropped a pop level - but was now owned by “the Neutrals”. This is no joke.
But I have never seen this again and I think this may even have had something to do with the “settings” that SFGA ran the game under as on the couple of occasions I have seen this with Harley, the pop is under siege but does not change hands. I do not think destroy/capture makes any difference but its a hard one to measure, luckily I haven’t done it too many times
Thanks. Before I posted this, different experienced players had told me conflicting things with absolute certainty! Baja, you have convinced me.
Stags - I wonder if this is what happens when an army wins, but ends up with so little strength that it disbands? I have never seen it myself, so I suspect you are right that it is an old bug or game settings.
the biggest point is that they are only used in the first round of combat, either with the city or army. But, if there is no army, they are devistating!
