All the ‘critters’ perform as a combat-weapon and as such the same rules apply. So yes, all of them participate in popcenter-combat if no enemy-armies are present (or defending).
The reason why many players (IMHO) believe they do not help in popcenter-combat is because they don’t show up in the combat-report. But trust me, they are there…
