Dwarf Artifact Question

This is driving me insane!

In one game I have the horn of fear as the dwarves (#17). This grants conjure mounts.

When I went to learn conjure mounts it said I could not because it is on the lost list. Very irritating…

In anycase does anyone know how this thing works?
Do I need to use it as a combat artifiact and it is useable by anyone, or does it simply allow the holder to act like they know the spell conjure mounts???

Thanks,
Ken

P.S. Save the time responding and skip with the “use research artifact” responses please.

I had the same dissappointing experience…

Is the character holding the Horn of Fear a Mage? You didn’t make that clear.

I played the Dwarves but never tried to conjure mounts with it as it did not seem to be an action with much return on investment for my nation. I thought it better to use it for its primary purpose rather than have my lowish ranked mages conjuring a few nags per turn. Just because Dendra Dwar can conjure mounts doesn’t mean he should when there are so many more profitable things he can do.

My first question may have seemed obvious but just because you hold an artifact with a certain capability doesn’t mean the character with the ability can tap into it.

But, that is where the answer lies. The better question for you to ask is “Why…?”

There lies the knowledge you’ll need to save yourself from maddeningly frustrating situations like this one, over and over and over again.

So give it to a Neutral who might prefer the return…but double check first!

Ah, spoken like the true neutral you like to play.

Brad

Actually I have problems replying since the awnser is “Use research artifact” ;). I guess your problem arise from your assumption “In one game I have the horn of fear as the dwarves (#17). This grants conjure mounts.” I guess you problem is as simple as “It does not…”

You must understand that the artifact lists around are not the divine truth, in one game an artifact has a secondary power in another it does not. SOme are more random than other (I have e.g. never seen #15 not giving access to spirit mastery)

If your horn of fear gave access to conjure mounts, you would not get that message you get.

Good, so the question was actually answered.

What I wanted to know was if an artifact granted access to a spell or group of spells, it always grants access to “learning them” not just access to the spell while it is in your possession (as though you had a 100% casting ability with the spell while you had the arty). I am excluding arty’s which grant movement through their activation, etc.

Thanks.
Ken

P.S. It totally sucks BTW. Waste of like 6 orders over all to fix the issue. Such is life.

When you read the lists, you’ll notice that some allow the ‘casting of’ while others allow the ‘learning of’. When you do your crucial “Research Artifact”'s, you’ll spot the difference.

The point we’re trying to make is that the Sundry powers of artifacts are NOT static. The word always that you used is the crucial problem - there is no always, there are no guarantees. The game is mostly played in the grey area between the comfy black and white many would like.

I recently had the same experience as yourself. Tried learning conjure mounts but it failed. I did cast RA on the #17 and got the below response.
Note no access to conjure mounts spells.

Research Artifact - Horn of Fear #17 is a Horn

  • allegiance: None - increases combat damage by 500 pts.
