Ethical?

Ahhh, now there you come across the small matter of the M25 Parking Lot, a
really neat idea designed to allow cars to rust away into oblivion in each
others company, whiling away their twilight hours in slow moving herds under
the misguided pretence of circling the nations capital and avoiding the
congested city centre...... Mmm, perhaps I should get a job working from
home.

Cheers

Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

Still, I'm a bit baffled:

What's the point? Why not just drive your car?? :):)

I agree with almost all of what you say here Marc. What perplexes

me most,

is that when so may people feel the same way, is that we get so

little

interest when trying to get a player rating system going.

One of the things that really puzzles me is that folks are acting as
if some sort of rating system would be new. We *do* have a
scoring system right now, and a lot of people don't like it. We
should fix it, and if folks don't like it they can ignore it just as a
lot of people ignore what we have now.

Personally, I'd like to have two tracks: one based on new criteria and
another based on things that can be taken from older games. Any new
rating system will take at least a couple of years before enough games
have ended to make it at all useful. For older games all we could
have would be win/loss and nations present/eliminated at game end,
plus the scores. Since the individual VCs are useless, if the scores
get used only the base four should count.

Some folks think the base scores are not good diagnostics, while
others do. Rather than junking them I'd put them in one index - and,
over time, we can see how well they compare with other measures. I am
fairly sure that we'll see that the people who get the high *base*
scores win more games and are judged as stronger players by their
peers than the people who get low scores, but the best way to see is
to try it out.

If we are using the data that we can get, I'd be willing to help out
with compiling data. Here are the possible measures that could be
used with the existing information that we could have...note that we
could add a third category based on "new" criteria, such as player
votes for best performance, etc.

1. Number of games played; won/lost/dropped/eliminated. If we use
just this information we can rate new and old games on the same
system. So many points for a win, so many for a loss, a bonus for
being there at game end, etc. You'd have to figure out what to do
about standby positions.

2. Average score on 400-2000 scale (absolute) and average relative
score compared to the historical average for the position (0-100%
scale). If you don't care or like it, don't read it. Some of us do.
I'd prefer to have both measures. The first is just the straight
average; the second is normalized against the average scores for each
position (1650/2950). So if I played the 2950 Noldo and got a 1200
score, which is the median for all 2950 Noldo players, my "absolute"
score would be 1200 and my "relative" score would be 50%. If I played
the Woodmen and got a 600 score - and this was the median for Woodmen
players - my absolute and relative scores would be 600 and 50%. Your
final ranking would be the product of your relative score by the
number of games played.

I can't see any other mechanism which could be used for the games that
have already ended. If someone can, please speak up.

3. Something new, such as Laurences' player rating system.

If we can't agree on one number, I say compromise and provide
different ones. I'm willing to bet that the same people who do well
on one will do well on all...and I'd also bet that they could be
combined into one "index" if people are willing to respect what others
value.

Of course, the most important thing is actually to know whether we can
even get the historical information about scores/wins/losses...Clint?

cheers,

Marc

Ah, you are correct sir. And may I suggest a wife who works "downtown" (or at
least out of the home)? The combination is really unbeatable!! (Those who know
me, stop guffawing. Also, to any women on the list, please substitute "husband"

It's really not that hard. Just enter the scores into an excel sheet
and click on the sort button. A couple of minutes per game would do
it, with maybe an hour of data entry at the start.

So if the woodmen scores in the database were 400, 500, 600, 1000 then
a new score of 700 would be 80%. No biggie.

Yea, we've ended some games. Hey, if things shake out right I may be
in no games at all in a month or so. Harly will have to take out a
bridge loan

Marc

No, no. Harly will have to ask _me_ to help "arrange" a bridge loan! Good
memory, btw. What are you, a rocket scientist (or astrophysicist) or
something??? :):)

I don't want to go there. 'Nightmare. We have a lot of the information
stored away just in case but nothing from DGE. Start from scratch and see
how that goes.

Of course, the most important thing is actually to know whether we can
even get the historical information about scores/wins/losses...Clint?
