Ethics

Hi,

It seemed to me that some of the emails on the mepbmlist were from players
who were worried that we were running our business in an unethical way. We
don't normally discuss this outside the company but just so that you get an
insight into who we are and we stand for:

We have always used recycled paper, we drink fair-trade coffee and tea and
eat fair-trade food at lunch (and anything else that we can get fair trade
we use). We bank with the Co-op who do not invest in unethical businesses. A
small percentage of our profits helps to sponsor the activities of the local
World Development Movement group.

Employees discuss all aspects of the business practise. We agree on hours,
wages, what jobs they want to do and when they want to work - they also get
a mostly free lunch. They also help us decide the businesses direction and
help choose our pay level!

Everyone here earns about 60% of what they could elsewhere, but prefer to
work here because of the way we do things.

We are not pro Microsoft, we support copyleft and opensource development, as
we have with Automagic. We boycott firms which we think are sufficiently
unethical (the major food firms and banks, for example), and we don't think
Microsoft and Bill Gates quite fall into that category.

As with many ethics, we have to choose a middle-ground sometimes but we
attempt to act in an enthical manners as possible and this includes our
employees. I am aware that some of you might not agree with our ethical
choices, but just so that you are aware that we have given serious
consideration to how we run things here and what we want to achieve.

Thanks
Clint

RD: Heeey Clint, I wonder if you realise what a can of worms you've opened here?

Where do you stand on fur? Oh I forgot - nobody who works for Harle can afford fur anyway. Last time I saw you you couldn't even afford a haircut!

What d'you think we should about Saddam Hussein? Bomb him, ignore him, or try to reach an understanding with him? Hey, if any of your team can afford a car, it might be running on petrol refined from Iraqi oil!

Where do you stand on immigration? Why have you not got any black employees?

It's great you have opened your doors to female employees, but why have you given them the most boring job (inputting orders for those of us who can't/won't use Automagic)? Don't take them off it - they are better at it than you fellas and they spot more silly mistakes more often.

Do you also get them to make the coffee, wash up, dust, hoover etc?

Hope you realise this is sent in a spirit of fun!

  Richard.

Richard,
Shame on you for even thinking that Harlequin would have a less than
totally ethical policy on the points you raise ...

Where do you stand on immigration?
Why have you not got any black employees?

Immigration: Sam's from England and they employ him ...
Black people? What about all the Welsh people they employ? Some of
them must be black from all that time down the mines.

Ooops, the Tories closed all the mines down - so that analogy doesn't
work. Maybe you've got a point after all Richard!

On a serious note, I know from various discussions with the guys that
Harlequin are amongst the most ethically concerned people I have ever
met - if you're worries about their ethics, chances are you have
nothing to be worried about. Just don't send them any After Eight
mints or Mars Bars that's all.

Colin.
