We’re mid way through the 2nd day of the FTF and all’s going well. I’d estimate that the FP are, very, slightly ahead but all is very much swinging back and fore.
Everyone seems to be having a cool time, and we’re starting to plan the next one…
Truly a fine game. I played the Woodmen. For the first couple of turns it looked like I was going home on Friday evening as the DS chucked everything at Mirkwood. They managed to take out one of my MTs, after I’d challenged one of the five mages that turned up there on turn 1 - I lost and it turned out later that the DS had miscounted at could only do about 95 points of Spirit Mastery damage. Damn. On Saturday, they were taunting me that Dol Guldur was still held by the Dragon Lord - that was the turn I’d sent 5500 troops there & the Sinda another 5000+. Suddenly the taunts stopped. Subsequently the remnants of the army (a mere 3.5K troops, reinforced by another 1000 with 10 war machines) made it to 3120, which they trashed, going through 1800 hc of the Dog Lord in the process. The game ended around then so there is no saying what might have happened.
Final score: FP were dominant in Angmar, having pretty much taken out every WK & Rhudaur pop centre. Mirkwood wasn’t completely controlled as the Dragon Lord still held the revealed Sarn Goriwing. Rhovanion was closer as the Eothraim were under a lot of pressure, although I like to think that I, with the Sinda, had bottled up any new waves from the Black Gate so we would have been safe here. On the other hand, the FP had made no real impression on Mordor, the Corsairs were crumbling under the pressure of Harad, QA, Cloud Lord cavalry & LR cavalry and the Witch King had a large (huge? - can’t remember) army on the Noldo capital - quirk of the game setup, come along next time if you want to know why.
I still claim that the FP were winning but I bet most of the DS claimed they were winning so the honourable draw is probably the fairest result.
For those of you who haven’t been to a Face to Face before, I recommend it. Now that we have AutoMagic & Palantir, the turns almost seem leisurely (about 100 minutes turn around - or about 200 times faster than usual) but the amount you can learn about the game, and the opportunity to try new tactics, should not be missed.
Generally doesn’t work afterwards. Tactics for the w/end are different to the normal game for example and so it means then playing it as a normal game would be difficult.
One thing I’d like to do is extend the game through Sunday - that would add a few turns in (around 20 then I’d guess).
FTF games have a different emphasis to normal games and you get different things out of them. I generally learn more in a FTF game than in any normal game I play in for example.
