What do you mean? You mean he made it all up???

Actually he didn't completly make it up. He pinched
ideas left/right/and centre, and then modified to suit
his personal touch. I remember him complaining that
English legends were 'poor' compared to other nations,
(since Tolkien produced papers on the green knight and
old stuff like that, it wasn't as if he didn't know
about english literature. He just felt there wasn't
enough good stuff out there). I suppose he wanted to
see how he could do it himself

And it was a life-long work. I forget when he first
started middle earth (actually the term 'middle-earth'
came in late - 60's I think), but I feel it was during
the 1910's. And he was still modifying the world when
he crocked it. The last thing he did was a change on
the status of Galadriel - he wrote that she got
permission to leave the undying land, but she still
got affected by the ban on returning since she left
with the main bunch of noldor (and they were NOT
allowed to leave).

Laurence knows lots about old english literature, so
he might comment if (in his opinion) its crap. And
Richard knows his middle earth, so he might know the
dates I'm guessing at.

I just like to waffle.
