Flagship Voting

Forget the Oscars. Ignore the Baftas. Because the truly important awards are upon us once more - the Flagship Gaming Awards.

Flagship have only nominated three games in each of several categories. And, sad to say, Middle-earth PBM is not amongst them this year. However, in Flagship’s own words: ‘Because there are so many good games and only three nominations in each category, we will be operating a ‘write-in’ system: so if you want to vote for a game that isn’t nominated, by all means do so. These votes will be as valid as any other.’ So if you feel inclined to vote for Middle-earth PBM, you are more than welcome to do so!

However, even more important than voting for our game is to vote at all. So if you have a moment, please do consider placing your votes for your favourite games. The full list of nominations can be found on their website (www.flagshipmagazine.com) or in the forthcoming issue of Flagship, whilst you can vote either by email to carol@flagshipmagazine.com, or directly on the website. Which, we are assured, has software to prevent anyone from voting more than once.

Thanks
Clint

Well all it does it check the IP address to prevent the same IP address from voting twice. So an unscrupulous person could quite happily vote a number of times from different machines. Not that I am supporting this as it is obviously against the spirit of the thing.

Gavin

Understood. Thanks

Clint

Yeah, when i read that post voting, i LMAO. Very thorough way to stop it…not. I hope they are more thorough with the counting
I got 4 machines so…
U don’t even have to register to vote???

Adrian

Hi,
If you have four machines, then the likelihood is that you are using the same IP address, and only one vote will be counted. For example the person who tried to vote 100 times yesterday, may rest assured that only ONE vote (their first) has been counted.

Yes, you have to be a registered member of the Flagship site to vote.

If you think this is unsatisfactory, then we would be delighted to hear your suggestions on how voting could be made fair and not at all open to fraud.

Actually,

no u don’t have to be registered, because i’m not registered and it allowed me to vote UNLESS of course u don’t tell people that their votes don’t count???
and 2; the i/p addresses are different, i know this cause it’s very easy to check. I have a cable modem, one dial-up and 2 wireless laptops.
There are also lots of things that allow a ‘floating’ I/P. If u use dial up, each time u dial in, the server will assign u a different i/p. If the ‘ether’ is busy and u log off, switch off your modem, wait a few mins and go in again u will have a different i/p, because the server will have re-allocated your old one.

Adrian.
PS i don’t know how to make it better, just that u shouldn’t advertise that it is a really ‘secure’ way to do it.

Interesting - I can’t even click on the voting link if I’m not logged in. Hmm.

IP addresses – well I was only repeating what I was told by our web guy. At any rate, I don’t think I ever said anything about it being “really secure” - simply that multiple posts from one IP address would be disallowed.

Colin

Anyway, if a gamer is prepared to cheat by consciously voting multiple times, I would humbly suggest that they are not exhibiting much of a true gaming spirit. :-p

We can only do so much to make the votes fair - if there is too much abuse, then we’ll have to restrict voting in future awards to Flagship subscribers.

Colin.

Colin - I work in IT and have managed a web site so I know about these things. The web guy was partially right in what he told you. Often (though not always) the IP address that is given from a company on the web is the IP address of the Firewall sending that routes traffic out. From a personal modem though most users don’t have a fixed IP address and the ISP dynamically allocates one, usually for a few days. This means that the IP address can change over time.

I agree totally that it is against the gaming spirit - which is what I implied in my first post. I have only voted once (but didn’t need to put my Flagship user name in).

Gavin

Thanks Gavin  System now definitely tweaked so registration is required.

C.

Cool. That should also fix much of the multiple vote issues.
Unless of course some person with too much time on their hands wants to register multiple times with different user names etc.
I agree that the multiple voting shows poor spirit, but as we well know there are a whole range of different attitudes to game play out there.

As an aside, did my vote from the other day count??? I am a registered user already, i just didn’t bother to sign in when i voted.

Adrian

Yes Adrian, your vote counted.

C.

Thanx dude.
Won’t vote again then hahaha
