Forum vs the List...

Well, Laurence and others, I guess you'd better get busy!

For those of you who prefer the mepbmlist, I would like to
call your attention to the last 10 or so days. In that time,
I believe we've seen a number of emails from Clint, mostly
in regards to setting up games, and the entire Automagic 2003A
thread. That's all. Simply bureaucratic business process
type stuff. Real exciting.

In that same approximate time, the new forum has had over 100
new members subscribe (total 136 at this time) with 43 new
threads started which include almost 400 posts and have an
estimated 4000 views between them, based on approximately 10-20
views per post (people reading but not getting involved).

Maybe some of the newness of this (3rd..? 4th..?) new forum
will wear off and the list will reclaim some of it's activity.

Myself, I appreciate BOTH, and fondly recall much of the
bright and witty writings I've read here...where have they
all gone...?

Sincerely,

Brad Brunet

We're happy to support both. Both List and Forum go through busy phases.

Er have you actually _read_ any of the stuff on the new forum? Virtually all of it is game specific (which is a Good Thing IMO because we don't all have to read it) and virtually all of it is "taunts". Not witty taunts, or thought out taunts, but inane remarks which make me think I am much too old for this game now (i.e. over 11 years of age). Take a look at the game 67 thread, as an example if you can bear it.

Again the "ghetto" phenomenon comes into play. Clearly a lot of "players" like their taunts, so it must surely be better for them to be out of sight and out of mind in nicely labelled threads. Yes, I am becoming too old for this game, I am beginning not to care.

As for the posts on this list about setting up new games, I agree with you. Clint should be policing this much more rigorously. If it's an "advert" to raise a team, or interest for a new game, then it's relevant, and should be posted to the list. If it's one person asking about a game, or responding to a new game announcement, e.g. a chap by the name of Paul Brandon this morning, then he needs telling NOT to put his private business into the download trays of 330+ people. I hope Clint will start to do this instead of just replying with an "OK" message to the list, which generates more clutter which we don't want to download or read. I have to bite my lips every time it happens, and if he does not take it on then soon I'll be advising people like Paul of the existence of the direct me@middleearthgames.com e-mail address. And I don't have a financial interest, so I won't be so polite. No doubt I'll be accused of flaming at that stage.

For other content on the list, it flares up from time to time quite nicely. When someone has a question or comment on general strategy or game mechanics, this is still the place where it will get the widest readership and the most likely response. And as for starting a discussion here - to do so for the sake of it, or out of any feeling of "competition" with the forum" would be rather contrived wouldn't it? And you Brad, are just as capable of starting one as I am. On consideration, I suppose a good troll would be refreshing - I always like to se the Americans get wound up

*** With the new Forum you are able to hide posts from certain players. Very useful if you want to avoid hearing from me for the 10th time that day for example!

Virtually

*** Some players like it. Each to their own and if you don't like it just stay clear. Different definitions of "funny" going on here - I know that my sense of humour (and others) doesn't always transfer well so I am cautious about.

As for the posts on this list about setting up new games, I agree with
you. Clint should be policing this much more rigorously.

*** Not sure if that was his point? Was it Brad? Sometimes players just don't notice. It's fine with us - if it's a problem with many of the players on this list get in touch and I can take action.

If it's an
"advert" to raise a team, or interest for a new game, then it's relevant,

*** It's his call to do so.

*** If you are rude then I will take action.

For other content on the list, it flares up from time to time quite
nicely.

*** Yes I agree, sometimes there's some interesting dialogue going on. I think it's easier to do here than on the Forum.

Laurence; why don't you just change the settings on your subscription
to the new forum so that you don't get every posting to your email
inbox. It seems like it would save you a lot of what obviously
aggravates you.

As for which board Paul Brandon posts on, it is his choice. Perhaps
he finds the other board easier to use or likes the format better. I
personally find this board more cumbersome to use, but check it from
time to time as it is part of the overall community.

I hope Clint will start to do this

Sorry my bad;-)

In error I thought Laurence Tilly's comments about winding up
American trolls was pointed at me. Upon reading your message Brad, I
can see it was probably aimed at you. Laurence, Mr Brunet here is a
Canadian, a minor point perhaps as both our nations are American
nations but the Canadians take a rightful pride in the difference.

Brad, I too like the new forum. Perhaps it is getting more traffic
now because of its novelty. Perhaps it is because it is easy to use
and has all those neat bells and whistles. In any case since it is
there as well as this list, I believe like Clint that it should be
the writers choice on which one they post on. The new forum has rules
concerning the nature of posts, has the ability to filter what posts
the viewer gets in his personal inbox and has the ability to send
private personal emails to a particular member, so if Laurence was
that put out over a particular posting he had the opportunity to take
that up on a one on one basis with the person who posted the
offending thread. He chose this forum instead. As for the words
ghetto, flame etc I really don't understand Laurence's need to
denigrate others who post but that is an issue for him.

At any rate I now see his problem was with your post. Have fun
getting wound up if that is what you choose. I always enjoy reading
your threads.

Now you've made a worse one. I made a joke about winding up Americans _with_ trolls. Not the same thing as saying that Americans are trolls who need winding up - though such a statement might make an amusing troll post. It was an attempt to lighten the tone. Never mind.

  As for the words

ghetto, flame etc I really don't understand Laurence's need to

And there you appear to go from misunderstanding to deliberately twisting what I said. I didn't denigrate anyone, not have I any wish to. I merely said that if I were to tell someone rather bluntly that 300+ people don't want to download "put me in a game please" or the "OK" reply to it, then I would likely be accused of flaming.

I don't think Laurence was denigrating me personally, but then,
there are language usage differences across the pond and he
very well may have been calling me various vile and evil things
that had his fans back 'ome chortling in their warm pints.
I can take it.

Clint and Laurence have simply argued of the need for both lists.
I don't favour the dissolution of this one, I was simply poking
fun at those who stuff their noses up at the..oh what's the
word...anyway... folks who prefer the forum, as their cherished
mepbmlist is quite boringly quiet at the moment. Probably a
good thing considering the direction some of the more recent
long threads went (see player ratings...).

I appreciate your approval of my national differences. Keeping
it light, as opposed to the olde country, our beer is cold, and
in comparison to yours, our beer is beer.
