They never gelled as a team; if one side does and the other does not
the disorganized team will lose. This is independent of play balance,
IMO...

Good game all.

Marc

RD: Well played all on our team. Marc is right, once we shook down and
played as a team I don't think the end was ever in doubt. Special kudos to
Marc for co-ordinating the team effort.

The pleasure in our victory seems to be somewhat muted. I suspect this is
firstly because the DS quit early, and we never got the climatic battle at
Barad-dur.

More importantly, there seems to me to be one very big flaw in the game (and
this is your designer talking!). This is the polarisation of the opposing
sides, which meant that a lot of nations went several turns before they saw
any action, and also that some of the FP were never once troubled in their
home territory, making a dull game for the players concerned.

My Woodies for example, never took a single hit except when they marched
into hostile territory. This made it the dullest game of ME I've ever
played. I will just hold my hands up and say that this variant simply
doesn't make a good game. There are lesser problem, namely that the DS
don't start with the bundles of agent/stealth arts that they get in 1650,
and there are no dragons, so this variant may be slanted in favour of the
FP.

I personally will abandon this variant as a failed experiment, but I don't
regret trying. If you don't try things you never know how they will turn
out. The experiment has at least given me some important insights into what
works and what does not!

Many thanks to all on both sides who took part, and to Harle without whose
help and hard work there would be no variants to experiment with!

Richard.
