FS 25/4

Hello Everyone

Origin Awards: The voting for the Origin Awards has started, 1650 and 1000
are up for the "Best PBM" category.

http://www.aagad.org/FinalPublicvotinginstructions.html

Basically I am going to be away from the office most of April, had my
holiday last w/end (Hay on Wye - very nice! too many books bought!) then I
am out of the country for the rest of this week - back early next week.
Then we're off to EuroGencon until Monday and then I have a few family
things to go to along with other bits...

So what does that mean to you? Games will be delayed in setting up
basically - I've organised as much of it as I can - but no doubt some things
will not work out right. Extra little bits won't be done nor much project
work including the PRS beta test and around 6 others...

Also minimal w/end work will be done... and if I know the lads....

Euro Gencon - Just back from that - although it was a quiet convention we
met up with a nice bunch of lads from the games and as usual it was cool
chatting to you all! (Pete C I still think your work in game 83 was great
btw! ) We've just got back from that and hope to get the new set-ups
into the game asap.

US Gencon - we're very likely to be turning up and having a stall at US Gen
Con (Indianaopolis) this year. Myself and Stu should be the people there,
but we could really do with a couple of helpers so if you feel that you
might be suitable for this get in touch and we can organise a deal for you.
 Dates are 4days around the w/end of 20th July. Accomodation (floor
space is fine) very welcome.

The following new games are filling up.
1650 2wk [Game 87]: 18 available. (20/4) Some postal (non-prisoners) players
2950 2wk [Game 224] 1 FP nation needed
2950 2wk [Game 227]: 21 nations available. [24/4]
1000 2wk [Game 48]: 21 available: (9/4)
Bofa 2wk [Game 104+105] Beginners game: 2 experienced. (Get in touch if
experienced for a special deal here - all the game for cheap!)
Face to Face Game: June 22 w/end (Fri mid-aft until Sunday) - 7 available
(5 if 2 GMs play as is likely) with 8 possibles. (Some players will no doubt
double up but we want to keep that to a minimum).

Setting up in a game:
When I get all 25 nations into the game I will allocate you your choice of
nation from the list of nations that you have sent me - please send multiple
nation choices as this helps to get everyone their 1st or 2nd choices - if
too many choose only 1 nation the system falls apart. All nations are
potentially available until I set up the game.

Descriptions of the type of game follow - please check this when contacting
me with regards playing in that game. When joining with allies please tell
me so that I can help out. You cannot join 1650/2950 games as Neutral with
an aligned or Neutral ally.

Upto 2 nation game: You can play one or two Aligned nations, or one Neutral
nation.
2 nation game: You must play two nations.

Note please ask for variant games we can try to get you opposition for them
if you are interested - mostly Grudge teams though - if I get 10 players for
any single type of game then I will put it up for general availability below
and push it;

Grudge Games we need opposition for:
1000: None
2950: GM Team
1650: John Simpson [12 FP (mid-May start)] Jim Christensen DS 6x2 (mid-May
start)

I have drop-outs available - don't forget you get a free turn for taking
these up...
E [Early] = 0-10 turn, M [Midgame]= 11-20, L [Late game] = 21+ [A= Aligned
if a Neutral, N= not aligned if a Neutral, P = Postal and Email game, G=
Grudge, 1w = 1week game, 3w = 3week game]
Bofa: None
1000: None
2950: None
1650: 23 EN
Gunboat: 1x2 (m), 1 (l), 1x2 (e) (Please note past turns for all these
nations are available)

Thanks
Clint

You can vote online. Just avoid the Download options and
you'll get there...it isn't the best written page, but I
voted off it..after a couple tries.

I was just curious to see what the categories were. I thought it was a bit rich of MEPBM to juxtapose a suggestion that we vote for them with all the stuff about delayed startups and still no fruit on "projects" such as the PRS and MEOW. I thought it might be one of those ones that ranks each game by "value for money" and "customer service". It turned out to be even more flawed than those ones, just asking for the "best" game out of a selection in loads of different categories - best PBM, best FRP, best board game etc. How on earth can such a competition have any value when the judging is open to people who haven't played (or in my case haven't even heard of) most of the shortlisted games? Well worth a miss IMO.

You told me you never voted on these things!
  Richard.

I thought it was a bit rich of MEPBM to juxtapose a suggestion that we vote for them with all the
stuff about delayed startups

*** To the best of my knowledge there have been no delayed startups. Have I missed something here? If there any delayed and players feel aggrieved then please get back to me - my apologies. We generally start up two games a week. Feel free to bring any complaint to me off list if you prefer so that I can respond in depth.

and still no fruit on "projects" such as the PRS and MEOW.

*** Um MEOW is in the Beta (or later) playtest. AM is out, XML is out, new variants of games are out, accounting bits and pieces are out, error checking before turns is out, turn not in warning is out. GWCs are 99% ready - it's a matter of dotting the "i"s on most of the projects and letting you guys lose on them.

We demoed MEOW at the convention as well as the MeMapmaker (expected release in 3wks - so triple that!) programmer. Anyone who works with programmers knows that things don't always go to schedule. As most of them are working for free or minimal rates we know that there'll be delays. I try to keep you guys upto date with the situation and on limited budget this is what we can do. But we could go back to the old days of no development if you wish, no variant games etc. Unfortunately we were left in the lurch by one programmer for MEOW so our apologies for that - outside our sphere of influence. Unfortunately I have not been in the office much recently due to holiday, trip to US, EuroGencon and various family matters so haven't been able to keep the pressure up on these to get them upto date. PRS is ready but I need to error check it for consistency and the like.

For those not aware Harlequin Games has just bought the rights to Legends to licence it (as well as the games from 3 companies), along with all the work that means. So we're trying to complete the bits and pieces that we have left for ME. This means that looks rosy for the stability and future of our PBM game as there will be no doubt some crossover and mutual skills shared. From a marketing perspective alone it's great.

We also want to develop our game in the future but that's put on hold for the time being once we have completed the projects we have set ourselves. For Middle Earth I have some ideas that I think players might like but for now we're putting them on hold temporarily (say a few months).

How on earth can such a competition have any value when the judging
is open to people who haven't played (or in my case haven't even heard of)
most of the shortlisted games? Well worth a miss IMO.

*** My take on this is that players can vote for games that they like - simple. If not, don't vote. We're not forcing any of our players to vote - but assume that most players who play the game with us enjoy it and what we can offer and consequently would like to support the game in whatever manner they can. Voting brings awareness to the public and gets more players in - ie it rewards you lot in the long run.

Have fun and help make it fun for others.

Clint

No delayed start ups, but you said to expect them. Read what you wrote:
