FTF USA

Okay from the initial response this seems on. Vague plans include Stu in
the US around the 22nd June anyway so we'd like to plan around that. So
either the weekend of 28-30th June OR 14-16th June. Start Friday evening,
and play through to Sunday. We'd like to make a holiday of it and see some
sights whilst we are there so we'd intend to be there earlier/later to sight
see.

So we'd bring 3 GMs. One for each team and an inputter/adjudicator/general
stuff.

What we would need is someone to organise the event at the US end - like
Ulrik/Bue did in Copenhagen. Who can offer to do that?

We need: Power supply, place to sleep (for 3 GMs and possibly more - floor
is fine!), 2 War-rooms (oen for each team) and an input station (possibly in
one of the War-rooms). A kitchen and a place for everyone to meet up would
be cool as well. Can anyone provide that? And if so at what cost?
(Copenhagen game everyone paid a small amount to the hire of the Scout Hut
which was fine).

Format of the game would be 1650 12vs 12 with Fort on 1910 and 4217 unless
players want something else. Looking at the list I suggest that we run the
event in Chicago (or environs) but other places might be okay instead. East
Coast is closer (ie cheaper) but there seem to be less players interested.
We'll go where the players are.

We need our costs covered (300 a ticket, so some 750 minimum) plus
expenses. We're not too interested in making a big profit - something to
cover us would be fine, mostly there to meet the players. We can
potentially run TWO games if there are enough players - we'd bring either
more GMs or some trusted players (those with some experience of the FTF game
much preferred). We'd need around 40 players for that. (22 otherwise).

I think that you can run 4/5, 11/24, 6/7 (maybe) okay - other nations might
be able to be doubled up though.

Costs are 2.90 a turn I think but it depends on the cost for us to get
there. 2.50 for the 2nd nation.

What I need from you are comments that you are interested and if so when and
what would be the best dates (fitting in with the above details).
Provisionally Chicago - but either location (ie a builiding with such
rooms - cheap) or players (most players) or preferably both are the deciding
factors there. Having a hotel booked sounds great.

Comments very welcome.

Clint

28-30 June could be dicey -- it bumps up against our
4th of July (Independence Day) holidays -- a time when
many families take the whole week off; effected
spousal units might be inclined to impose the marital
veto (or not, depending on how that goes).

Clint,

My company plans events so I could help setting up places etc. The only
real questions would be budgets etc, really what people are willing to pay
and then book the type of venue that makes sense for that.

I for one believe St. Lious might make more sense, because Chicago is
expensive, like New York. Your call though.

Also, summer is my festival season, so I need to make sure that I don't
have shows surrounding the event. That could be bad.. hehe..

Not familiar with Chicago, so I'll give you my thoughts on
Washington, D.C. -

1) East Coast (cheaper for Clint & co. - less cost for U.S. players)
2) 3 Int'l airports (Dulles, National, and BWI) within an hours drive.
3) Great subway/mass transit access
4) Several major universities in the area that could serve as a host.
(University of Maryland, George Washington University, American
University, Catholic University, Georgetown University, George Mason
University, or Howard University)
5) Almost all site seeing is free of charge - i.e., Smithsonian
Museums - Air & Space, Natural History, American History, National
Zoo, Capitol, etc.
6) Great nightlife - D.C. Georgetown bar scene
7) June weather is typically great (70-80s)

So, for the first FTF U.S. event why not do it right - go D.C.!

gotta agree with you there.... sounds good. I was thinking that perhaps
the School of the Art Institute (in Chicago) might have space available
in the summer when students were gone (or Columbia College downtown)
but have no idea how much that would cost, plus parking in downtown
Chicago is not an easy or cheap thing....

anyway, just wanted to chime in that your description of DC sounds
great.

this from someone with relatives in Philadelphia that need visiting...
(for those who don't know Phila is a short train ride away from DC)

True. However, Chicago is a town that is easy to get around in with just the subway and bus system. When we normally go, we actually stay in Niles (A suburb) and take the lines in to downtown. It is cheap, and relatively quick.

Or, alternatively, we book a venue in our hotel (or within walking
distance of our hotel). Everybody could then park once in the hotel
lot, leave their cars for the weekend and bus/cab around if we go out
on the town.

Speaking of that, how are the days normally scheduled? Are we gaming
24/7? How much time alotted for sleep/food/beer? Would we start Fri
morning/midday and finish Sun night?

Good point! This also means that it is rather close to Origins (a
major US PBM/gaming Convention) which runs July 4-7. This could
potentially impact the availability of players.

To those interested in a FTF in USA:

Wouldn't Vegas be pretty cheap? There are package
deals for flights and hotel ($300 roundtrip tickets
and 2 nights) for cheaper than any other city I could
think of. They lure you in with casino and gambling,
and we exploit them by taking advantage of the deals.

What does everyone think?

Vegas rocks!! That would be incredible.. We could get rooms over at the Rio
(all rooms at the rio are suites) and they aren't that expensive... Plus
the Rio has clubs, resturants, and bars all built in... Airfares are cheap
and it is truly a sweet destination..
