Hi,
As you may be aware, we've been delaying games of ME since PIPEX had a
problem on Thursday. We judged that it would be unfair to run games with turns missing, based
on
this and have emailled the missing players in an attempt to keep the games
turning over smoothly. Please get in touch if you have any problem. We will do everything
possible
to make sure this affects you as little as possible.

PIPEX Mail Service Update
(15/1/2001)
PIPEX regrets to announce that its dial-up mail service hosted by UUNET
has
not yet returned to normal. The service was severely affected on Thursday
11th January 2001 following a major Unsolicited Commercial Mail (UCE)
attack.Engineers worked continuously on all mail servers throughout Thursday and
Friday and the weekend. We had hoped to be able to clear the worst of the
more than two million UCE (or Spam mails) in time for the late Friday mail
rush. However this was not possible with the result that the servers remained
effected over Friday and into Saturday. Work has continued and continues
now.The combined effect is that although some customers will already be seeing
delayed mail arriving we expect there may be some difficulties experienced
for the next 48 to 72 hours.Although most of the UCE mails have now been deleted the quantity of
genuine
mail stored is so great the system, which serves around one million users,
is continuing to pass mail only slowly. We currently believe that no mail
has been lost. However, some PIPEX customers will be seeing 'undeliverable mail' messages
as a result of the duration of this problem. Although it is unlikely that
mail will be lost on our system the extended duration of the problem is
triggering an automatic response to inform senders of the problem. UUNET
have now changed the settings so that this should not happen in more than
a
few cases. Where it does, originators of messages affected are advised
either to store the message and re-send later, re-send immediately or send
by an alternative means.PIPEX and UUNET apologise for any inconvenience caused. Every effort is
being made to achieve a speedy resumption of normal service. PIPEX and
UUNET
are taking all reasonable steps to ensure there is no repetition of the
UCE
attack of last week and we can confirm to our customers that we are
pursuing
···
the perpetrator.
Action will also be taken as part of the continuing upgrading of the mail
service to continue to take every reasonable precaution against UCE in the
future.****************************************************************
