FW: AutoMagic Problem

I haven't gotten any responses back from those people who originally sent me an E-mail
regarding the "Run-time >error '1004'" error message problem. This latest E-Mail
(below - which includes a lot of very helpful info) tells me that the problem is still
out there for some, but the lack of response seems to indicate that those people who
did have the problem have somehow gotten around it.

If you have ever had a "Run-time >error '1004'" error message when attempting to SEND
your orders in, **PLEASE** contact me and let me know the following info:

1. Did you fix the problem? If so, how?
2. Did the problem only come up when you answered "Yes" to the "Do you want to to
automatically attach your orders to an E-mail?..." prompt?
3. What version of Excel were you using?
4. What Operating System were you using?
5. What E-Mail software were you using?
6. What ISP were you using?

The problem looks to be related to the E-Mail/ISP combination, but I can't tell unless
I get more data from others. It will greatly help out people new to Automagic if you
can share your information regarding this problem.

Thanks,
Mike Mulka

All is working well, except in the SEND sheet, where I get a "Run-time
error '1004'": Microsoft Excel did not find anything to print." error.
This occurs after the 'Do you want to to automatically atttach your orders
to an E-mail?...' msg. I've answered yes.

Only Excel file open.
ISP is Compuserve.
Excel 97 SR-2 running on a PIII 600.

Debug option highlights

au16.xls Module2.

Idly leafing through some old ME articles, I suddenly had an idea about how to make light troops workable. Just give them better movement rates off road. It would probably take a complete overhaul because I visualise them having better movement rates than cavalry in swamp/mountain terrain and much better rates than heavy infantry.

Just a dream, I realise, as there's no way we could change the program but it's been months since anyone discussed changing the rules.

Light troops exist for one of two reasons:
1) Specific value in specific situations, that is tactical operations. This concept is rather more developed in the Napoleonic than mediaeval period - if you read the Sharpe books, TV films, you'll see the idea of the value of the skirmisher in support of heavy troops. And ultimately the paratrooper unites of WW2 represent the idea of special light troops with highly specialised training.
2) Economic reasons. Only a small percentage the men who might potentially serve in most mediaeval armies could afford good armour.

If you wanted to develop 1, then making light infantry better than heavy in some situations, eg mountains and hills would be the answer, but personally I would rather see such bonusses/penalties distributed by nation to develop the idea of racial characteristics. For 2, see the ideas in the Fantasy Mepbm 2nd Edition on my web site. It's my contention that in a pseudo mediaeval setting a heavy infantryman is a chap who can afford armour and a light infantryman is a chap who can't - hence the suggestion there is for a single type of infantry, whose strength and constitution is affected only by the weapons and armour you give him.

I'm having the same problem. When you hit send it generates the
error. Also, it opens a blank excel sheet, since I have to
close "book1" to get out of it. This only happens when I click "SEND"

Using Excel 2K with Windows 98.

Email Software is Outlook from Office 2K

ISP is MSN.
