Game 062

Yep played chess, but must be a long time ago!

I know that the last results were a bit hard for you.
The loss of two main chars isn’t so easy to compensate…

On the other hand you have the rich NW-nations and you’re cleaning Mirkwood!

Okay, NG is history but with Harad and SG you have the economic-power to gain some more ground in the south.

You might lose this game, but you haven’t lost it up to now.

Like I’ve said before, the DS have got some beating!

As a former neutral, I would say it well depend on your team-gaming, it will decide if you will win or not!

Have Fun!

Gixxx

Gixx!!! what are you doing  Keep bigging them up and they’ll vote to keep playing thinking they’ve got us beat.

More seriously though Guys, if you really feel as a team that you have lost and would just be playing an end game, then some of us on the DS would appreciate not going through the death throes (although I bet some would)

Having said that, we will hunt you all down and make you bow before our Lord Sauron if we have to… :stab:

Michael
WiK

Hey Gixxx

I think you mean “with Harad you had some economic power”…
I think the next 2 turns will be the ones where Harad diminishes and goes into the West…

Yeah, loving it.

Tony the QA

It appears that you’ve not been informed but, yes, we’ve conceded. The game could easily last another 10-15 turns but we don’t see anything but a DS victory.

Plenty of reasons all round, not least good play from the DS team, but we also had major struggles at the beginning of the game co-ordinating with postal players in the USA. Goblingate would probably have fallen much earlier if it hadn’t been for that consequence.

We also failed to support North Gondor when the game was shifting away from us.

Still, some good play by the FP team not least Harad and North Gondor who did very well indeed.

The free people conceeded to the ds in this gm. Interesting points to ponder:

  1. why no use curse squads (other than you didn’t need them)
  2. what in the world happened w/ RofW?
  3. anyone track how much gold you actually stole from us all game long?
  4. interesting attack on NG this go, lots of dragons in those armies, congrats on that.
  5. good use of emissaries and and agents to improve your economics rather than trying mass 615’s and 525’s…unless I misread the flow of your strategies.

for my part the noldo set out early to accomplish a few things:

  1. increase our military presence by camping and upgrading 1609 to help w/ rhudaur/duns…putting a fort on imladris…and putting troops in the face…

1609 was a MT and actually a nice stopping point on my way to other points…

  1. use mages in more ways then simple cursing…elrond in particular was a very very good emis and had many others…had picked up several artifacts w/ teleport capability and combat bonuses. Lots of scrying and other information getting early on.

  2. economics wasn’t good. camps were few and far between…but wound up with all pop centers upgraded and several Mts…focused on improving what I had when I realized I had overcommitted to military b/c of the problems we faced w/ dwarves (who dropped and my brother picked up) and woodmen being postal players and the loop and feedback of information was “retarded” I think more from our own efforts.

  3. leadership was lacking. We did not plan more than a couple turns ahead so those guys were largely excluded from our strategy, which I think hurt us a lot in the beginning. Both of those players were new, having only played BOFA if I remember correctly. They made rookie mistakes we couldn’t email and suggest otherwise. But we failed to adjust to this reality.

I realized early on in this game that we needed to get more organized but I was unwilling to start that role given my real work situations…perhaps that fact was the umbrella underwhich I would fault other decisions I made.

anyway, good game to the dark guys I salute your efforts, we definitely played reactionarily and did not dictate action I felt.

I personally salute your Drlrd player who staved off our advances for so long. I salute the Wk as well for his perseverence.

I would like to mention my nephew, first time player who got the NM. He was good to listen to what we suggested though he did play largely as he wanted. His “street iq” was high to begin with but he is better than I would have thought.

The free team did well in various areas and i especially appreciate the steady play I’ve come to expect from Will Frankenhoff, arthedain in this game, the contributions of Rick Dorsey, rhudaur, and our harad player, Steve Pickering. South Gondor was massive and I was impressed with how he was able to take on Cardolan as well and start working those nations together. Good job Matthew Riley.

I enjoyed this game tremendously though I confess I’m going to step back and play neutral positions for a while, since I haven’t really in all these years…should be fun.

Jason Roberts Noldo 62, Woodmen & Arthedain gm 72

and a soon to be wooable neutral coming soon to a game near you…

Hey Guys,

Drats! Just as I was about to flip a HAR MT, take Pelargir and setup a southern FK empire!!!

Well, as it appears FP have conceded now, congrats to my DS brethren and hats off to the FP for a hard fought and very fun game. This was actually my very first game of ME, but I was lucky enough to get placed on a team with a lot of very experienced, patient, and helpful players who quickly taught me the ropes, provided tons of great advice, and sent in the reinforcements I needed to hold the gap at a very critical point in the game for FK (when SG/NG actually made it through to my capital). The whole team played extremely well together, but my particular thanks to all the sage advice and guidance from the “old school” (grin)-- Michael, Tony, Bryn, Gary, Mike and Bob. You all have set my expectations for good team play at a very high bar.

As to your questions, Jason, I’ll let others weigh in too, but here’s my perspective:

  1. They’re in play, just not in the forefront as of yet. You would have seen them in force almost immediately had you not conceded. It took us a while to get Tinculin, and we didn’t have the WiK arti in use until recently, so they were about to emerge, but hadn’t been a big part of our strategy as of yet. As we were heading into a character game, that was about to change. I noticed that Shogmog narrowly escaped a sickness squad of your own this turn:eek:(but, fortunately for me, I had backups).

  2. I’ll let Mike (CL) tell that story. Suffice it to say, we got it early (QA – Tony-- fished it out of the pond in the very first turns), but, in later turns, it turned out to be almost as hard to hang on to as the One Ring.

  3. No idea, but it was a ton. You can thank Paul (IK) for that one. He was a thief extraordinaire, and actually was funding several nations with his haul for a couple of turns. Kudos, Paul.

  4. Thanks. Camp early, camp often. I named emis and sent them out early on to camp as much as possible. I got very lucky with camping this game, which helped me support lots of troops. Also, I got camps going in the Misties quickly, which seemed to be dragon magnets. At one point, I had four dragons in my main army, and Michael accused me of being too greedy…so I had to stop keeping my emis in the mountains. The dragons were definitely a key part of the change in momentum, as I was able to take Ithil with their help (and support from my mates, of course), and then Oz. By then, the recruiting machine was in full swing and I, with a big assist from DkLs (Erik), was able to buy the TI to rebuild the bridge and then flood the gap with troops, spelling the end of NG as the hordes of Mordor spilled forth (or some such rot).

  5. I think that’s true. Already mentioned Paul’s thefts being a factor. A number of us camped heavily, which meant that we had a lot of resources to send around, gold to share, etc. Tony’s coordination of buy-outs helped immensely, particular in the lean winter months. My biggest problem was the last couple of turns, when I was supporting a huge deficit in wintertime from some very large armies surging into NG (and still trying to recruit as much as I could), but even then my taxes only involuntarily nudged up to 61% in the worst of those turns. Others had some higher tax bumps, but we were all able to make sure we had gold and stuff to sell to keep everyone in play.

I think the real key was the way Eo/NM, etc. were always on the defensive thanks to the combined efforts of Gary, Mike and Bob in controlling the Rhun/Rhovanion. I think one of my favorite things about how this played out is that, when you look at what happened, BS was mostly a military nation this game! The “Rhun” team developed and executed a great strategy, which actually may have been aided by some of the coordination problems on the Freep side that you mentioned, Jason. Coupled with Bryn’s incredible ability to stay alive and kicking in the Mirkwood (almost couldn’t believe his stand at DG!!), and Michael’s skillful ability (with some help from two of the three Duns players) to delay the inevitable demise of Angmar (once Rhu went Free), it meant that Fortress Mordor was never really threatened in any serious way (the closest being the armies sitting on my cap, but even they weren’t enough to really drive through).

Anyway, those are my quick thoughts on the subject. I had a real blast this game. Game 62 sold me on ME (and I’m in quite a few games now – just ask Clint!:D). I’m sorry to see it end, as I had loads of fun being FK on this team. Thanks, from my end, in particular to the strong, determined play from both Alan (NG) and Matthew (SG). You guys kept the meatgrinder going from turn 1 and made FK a fun and challenging nation to play. Had I not been able to get the dragons into play when I did, things might well have gone differently.

Good game, and I look forward to other games with all.

All the best,
Mark (FK)

Cheers Mark, very well played. If only I hadn’t lost my fleet at Osgiliath at an unfortunate time I could have fuelled the meat grinder for a few turns more

Pelargir would have been -very- interesting this turn. I had about 4,000 or so troops, some upgraded, there along with multiple commanders, some guards, and emissaries from SG and Cardolan. A major bloodbath was on the cards!

Hi Guys

Yep it was a really good game - almost unexpectedly good for an open entry game. I knew no-one in my team before the game, though had played briefly with Harad if I remember rightly (though that didn’t help sway him to the DS!).
As QA I had a blast, even though I didn’t get any emis with bonuses, so got no help getting towards the QA dream of churning out 40 emis really early.
Most of my thinking went into trying to convince the 2 big southern neutrals not to go FP. In the end it was a shame that Corsairs were the ones that the DS got as the player running them was an imbecile who would take no advice and ran the nation into the ground. He only placed 2 camps, kept making metal weapons, recruiting archers/LI and trying ridiculously optimistic moves with low level characters (none of which worked). I think if Steve had gone DS and Corsairs had gone FP then the game might have ended 5 turns ago.
As it was Harad going FP made the game much more exciting and I was glad that I’d got paranoid enough to ‘go military’ about 4/5 turns or so before.
Shame that I won’t get a chance to see what my HC in steel with war machines would have done to North Harad…
I was also a little disappointed with the performance of my Misty camps - I placed a load of them and don’t think I got a single recruitable dragon (but then they all seemed to go to Mark, the dragon-magnet, FK).
Buyouts were the other place where I made a lot of effort - only one of them was a stand-out success, but the rest probably kept the whole of the DS nations in the game to the end by giving us something good to sell each turn. I’d be interested to know how much our buy-outs helped the FPs - or if you didn’t really need the market sells?

Cheers

Tony

Didn’t realise we had played before? Memory is obviously worse than I thought!

Was very tempted by your suggestions but felt that the more challenging game was going free, which was largely what decided my mind. [As said the problem with not taking 2715 really fouled the team up, especially because it involved the loss of Bain and items as well as a couple of other armies].

So that 2nd army heading for my northern lands was equipped HC. That would be nasty. It was a real pain with those agents sniffing around 2535 and 2732 as I couldn’t reliably operate the armies, although I think I only lost one character - albeit with a C35 item! :frowning:

On that turn I landed on your capital and then managed to SS I wonder what might have happened if I had attacked as beside the 3k troops I also had 52 war machines. [Basic plan was to burn that and then have the fleet move them to attack 2135. However as you said you had gone military so even without my foul up the latter wouldn’t have worked. Also I didn’t realise - 1st time as a neutral - that I needed to change my alignment to good before I could use the command item so although I would have taken 2337 from the Corsairs I don’t think I could have carried things much further.

However interesting game. As Jaz said we were always just a bit behind the game. Managed to transfer gold to Eo the turn they collapsed then repeated it with NG the following turn!:(:frowning:

Anyway a good game. Now just have to settle for beating you in the grudge game.

Steve

Does it mean that you’re looking for a rematch as a grudge?

Have Fun!

Gixxx

Sounds fun;) maybe we can even switch sides of the fence here:D

Good Game to the DS. Made my first at it very interesting. Though i was about to get the emmies rolling this turn, I don’t think there was much point in continuing on. Now, if i may ask, Tony, and others: I guess YOUR emmies were coming to my capitol soon, right?
The lowly Northmen were hurting economically, and my loyalties were all under the 10 point mark, except for my capitol. The continuous pressure put on by the Servants made it almost impossible to rebuild after the initial attack, but when my capitol moved to 2908, i began the tedious art of rebuilding. I had an emmy company at 2912, and had just taken it on turn 16, as the Dog Lord moved there. I was put into a tough situation when he took it, because that had most of my product in it that i was going to sell. A rookie mistake, and it almost cost me the game.
I must admit, i’m looking forward to future games with you guys, both on my side and against. May we cross swords again.:bash::fork::stab:

Jacob, the only Northman that can speak 7 different kinds of silence now.

Gixxx

No actually I was recruited by another of the G62 FP for a grudge team in G73 and found that Tony is playing the WK there.

A rematch might sound tempting but found things pretty hectic the past couple of months, both in gaming and at work [please excuse the foul language:p] so I’m definitely settling for just maintaining a single game at the moment.

Steve

Dragon Lord reporting in. Thanks for a very enjoyable game, particularly as my first playing nation 12.

Most has been said but in response to Jason:

  1. Re: Curses. I personally like playing an army game and saw this potential with the DrL, so for my part it meant that the likes of Khamul (ch170+) et al were only being released from military duty about now…
  2. The ROW is held by Celedring at 2212 - CL kept dropping dropping it (greasy palms?) and twice we had to return to uneventful hunting at 2212 to retrieve it.

As the DrL I very much enjoyed burning the WM backup turn 3 :fork: and ever so slightly disappointed that I couldn’t capitalise on the effort made in revealing the Sinda cities.

As for the ‘whole game’ I felt that we have been in pretty good shape all along, especially up until turn12. We took our foot off the pedal momentarily, though Gary as the DogL and LR with Adrian (Easts) supporting did keep mounting pressure in Rhovanian. Turn 13 was the worst for me…I sent my orders in without the attachment, got SS’d and consequently failed to move the CL agent squad to 2715…the only real mistake in Mirkwood.

Some people have said some kind words, so here are mine. Well done all DS. Mark, as a first time player you have done excellently and it would always be a pleasure to play in the same team as you; you asked constant questions, listened to advice and acted on it and by the end of the game you were giving your own advice too. And a gentleman to boot too. Tony held us together financially and without his constant attention to the purse strings and frequently successful buyouts we would have lost some nations to financial ruin almost certainly by now. Nice one Tony and its been great gaining your acquitance. As for that, the trio I’ve known for years: Gary, Mike and Micheal - the parties round mine! Is this our first? Don’t we normally start arguing about now? Probably a good time to stop then. LOL. This must be our best yet (together that is).
Well done Adrain with the hc, Paul with the gold, Bob with the back door and Erik with the Eothraim and of course 3621

Cheers

Bryn

A very short game for me!

Have Fun!

Hi Tony.

Harad cannot ‘Diminish and go into the West!’
They aren’t Elves!
Harad will just Die!
Hey Quitting! Quitting! FP Quitting! What a bunch of Cowards!:fork:

Cheers Adrian,
Easterlings.

Hi Jacob.

Good game, I salute you!
A pity with the diplomatic talk as I was going DS from Turn 0.
I always felt a bit bad replying to your e-mails, and also the misunderstanding about LR.
It was a good game by all and the FP dropping had also robbed me of Another Victory Condition.
So Easterlings will have to be content with 2nd place.

Hi guys. CL here. Cant believe the game is over (is it really?). Well, if it is going to me a love-in then I dont want to be last to join the party… For me the standouts of this game were

  • the new players on both sides. Like ducks to water as far as I can see. And that is very very rare in my humble experience. Kudos guys, especially Mark and JPipkin…

  • how unsuccessful my agents were ! I have a truely miserable kill count. Infact I am pretty sure that I did more damage with my cavalry than with my agents - NOT something I am proud of. I think I did the right things, mostly, but I just could not get it going properly. Plus twice failing to sabfort at 2212 with 90+ agents and dying (and dropping RoW) in the process, jeez…

  • the impact of the neutrals. If if if… if the replacement Duns and Corsairs had reverse course to join the FP, if Harad hadnt ss’d on a critical turn, if Rhu had gone DS & we’d a REAL fight of eriador… In particular a brave decision by Alan to continue down the DS route with his position under threat and wide open

Good game all. If I ever take CL again I promise to whip my agents harder, some how

Btw SG, there is a dragon at Pelagir, licking its lips at the thought of 4000 toasted SG sarnies

Cheers Mike

All,
there were TWO postal FIRST-TIME players at the start of the game. Brandon and Dilip are incarcerated and they played the Woodmen and Dwarves respectively. Due to the fact that they could only be reached via snail mail, communications between them and the team was very untimely. Dilip transferred the dwarves sometime around turn 8 or so (I think) but Brandon hung in there. Brandon survived due thanks to the generous donations of his allies! He was trying to repay their kindness by being an agent power and had named lots of agents and was starting to actually get them to be able to do stuff. The slowness of communications of what hexes he needed to move his agents to also helped the DS. I am speaking for Brandon and Dilip since I am the one who received their orders, sent them onto MEGames, printed out their turns, and mailed them their turns via USMail. I also forwarded messages from them to their team and back to them. Thank you, free nations, for allowing me to join your Yahoo group as that way I was able to include at least 4-5 nations turnsheet maps along with Brandon’s turns every time so that he could see what was going on. He was very appreciative of that. Thank you all for a hard fought learning experience.

John

Hi All,

WiK reporting in here…

I had a blast up in the NW. I think I tried very hard to open diplomatic channels with all neutrals… and found myself in regular contact with 2 - Har and Cor!!!

The DS spent many manhours working out and ranking the neutrals… which should we try and get and which should we leave… we even discussed whether to go for a 3-2 split to ensure a better game… and then decided that we couldn’t guarantee which way the neutrals would split so go for all  It ended up 3-2, and apart from getting Cor instead of Har (no offense to you Gixx… you just took over) it worked well. I think Har would have finished the game off in our favour… if you had seen what Cor had done to his position, you may all have suffered a morale loss and droped a long time ago  Nice Guy, but sheesh!!!

As you all know, I had to relocate my position, and was just about to jump on S Har with a smallish army draging a Dragon along for a laugh… I think I was the army removal service, so that QAv and Cor could come in uninterupted… but my Emmy squad was ready to take a MT per turn from this next turn coming, and Murazor had just been invited to help form the Trinity… the first of our Curse squads coming online.

So, overall, lots happening and lots of co-ordination with everyone.

I really enjoyed the experience… although it was quite depressing in the first few turns knowing the Duns were incomunicado and Rhu was only replying sporadically… hard knowing you are going to be forced to relocate really early and there’s not a lot to be done. I know I talked on the board about dragons joining my armies… it was all talk and hopefully made you all think twice before moving on my pop centres… it seemed far more important to have the dragons defend mordor, since we already knew I was going to move, it seemed sensible to safeguard my potential future home… just as well really

I took a lot of comfort in randomly picking a FP to taunt here… kudos to Northmen who gave back as good as he got… and a newbie to boot!!! I guess having support on your team helped you to not give up when we eventually targetted you big time  but well done.

I guess some/most of you will be signing up for the next 1650… wonder how the player splits will go… might see you in that game

All the best Everyone

Michael

You are hereby officially no longer our Agent specialist!!
